Is a Husqvarna a better made lawnmower than a John Deere?

I personally like Husqvarna better than John Deere. It's also easier to find parts in my area and servicemen with the know-how to work on them. If you're a homeowner, the John Deere is probably great. But if you're considering purchasing one of the two for commercial mowing, I'd say go with the Husky.

Who actually makes Husqvarna and Craftsman Rider Lawnmowers?

Is it AYP (American Yard Products)? Or someone else?

Once upon a time it was AYP. Currently, Craftsman and Husqvarna tractors sold at Sears are made by Husqvarna Outdoor Products, a North American division of the Swedish lawn and forestry manufacturer Husqvarna. Any Craftsman tractor with 917 as the first three digits of its model number was built by this manufacturer.

what new walk-behind lawnmower would you buy today?

i've narrowed it down to craftsman, toro, husqvarna. i'm currently leaning toward husqvarna.
i just bought a husqvarna with a honda engine. thanks for the input. except for the guy talking about a reel mower i don't think he ever used one!

I bought a Honda self propelled and am very happy with it. Has two blades and mulches very well. There are other brands that use Honda engines and Honda makes a non-self-propelled mower.YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Buy a Honda and follow the service intervals. You will get many years out of it.

Lawnmower blades... oh no!?

I have a fairly new Husqvarna lawnmower that has the deck taken off of the bottom, and I was wondering what would happen if I ran the lawnmower like that, given that I'm going to run it on even dirt surfaces.

It wouldn't be any worse than running the mower around without engaging the blades.

There is a shaft on the bottom of the engine that provides power to the deck. This shaft turns all the time... 'engaging' the blades is done by throwing a lever which tightens a belt to that shaft, thus making the blades turn. Frequent engage/disengage of the belt will often result in a slight burnt smell as the belt gets hot, heheh. In this scenario, you want to run the mower without the mowing deck - that is fine, and should not be a problem. Just try not to bottom it out, to avoid damaging the deck hook-ups.
