Pretty much anything that will fit under the hood, or if youre not too worried- practially any lawntractor motor - some modifying might need to done tho to the frame ( like extra holes to bolt motor down). Best bet is to go at least one size bigger in motor size- or same size motor- dont go smaller.
Also if a different brand from the original motor, some wire splicing might be needed.

I just got a new John Deere LA 115 riding lawnmower. It's a different brand and more advanced than the one I used to have. I had trouble starting it according to the directions which is to start it when the engine is cold with the throttle pushed to Full (rabbit). It will not start with throttle pushed all the way up, but it does start easily with the throttle halfway.

Is this normal or does it indicate that there is something in the motor isn't adjusted right?

We've had John Deere here on the farm for years, yes, it should be in full rabbit position for starting only. What's the position after starting? Do you lower it, if you do, you should contact your local dealer, it's not running properly.

I'm a big guy 6'5" 280 that needs a mower for 2 acres. I'd prefer a John Deere, as I hear they are more reliable. I also don't want to spend all day mowing. I'm okay to about $2500, so I can't really look at any other series than the L100s.

for your budget the John Deere's are the best. However there are others that are good as well. I have a kubota tractor that is over 16 years old and it has never had any problems. I also own a kubota zero turn mower as well as an exmark walk behind mower. Both are great machines. Kubota is probably out of your price range but exmark makes a lot of residential mowers which you may want to look at. They don't sell them at lowes and home depot though so you'd have to locate a dealer.
