I have a john deere riding lawn mower I can not get it to charge, need wiring diagram for this model
you can get one at any John Deere dealer.
turning the ignition switch off and on real fast the cluth engages for a short period of time,i understand there ia an adjustment for the clutch , would like to know where it is and how to adjust it.
I don't think it is the clutch itself, or even the adjustment of it as that usually has to do with providing adequate tension on the belt to prevent slippage.
Your rapidly cycling the switch OFF & ON suggests the possibility of the contacts within the switch not making proper contact. However, I would not concentrate on that switch first.
The symptoms you describe suggest an INTERMITTENT "OPEN" condition somewhere in that circuit. This could be a bad [loose or corroded] GROUND connection, or within a CONNECTOR on the back of the switch, or similar condition within the control switch.
The first thing I would do is to disconnect any or all grounds [actually remove the screw or bolt] and use a small wire brush to clean/remove any rust, dirt or other debris from the contact area. Do this both on the grounded metal as well as the connector and the screw or bolt.
Reassemble and test run the system. If this doesn't correct the problem then look for any chaffed insulation [could be exposing a wire conductor to "shorting" against a grounded metal part] or breaks in the wires supplying power to and through the circuit. Reinsulate [Electrician's tape] any bare/chaffed wire insulation, or splice any broken wires. If that doesn't correct the problem, then I would suspect the switch itself.
IF the intermittent involves the CONTACTS INSIDE the switch, those contacts are dirty, corroded, worn, or defective. Before trying to replace the switch, I suggest that you disconnect the wires from the switch and try a test.
There usually are two wires attached to the switch. One delivers electrical current TO the switch, and the other wire [when the switch is CLOSED] delivers the current to the coil within the clutch, causing it to engage.
Using a test lead, or a jumper wire, connect the two switch wires together. This should cause the clutch to cycle to the engaged position and it should STAY there until you disconnect the wires.
IF this test does correct the problem then you need to replace the defective switch.
IF you are VERY mechanically inclined, you may be able to dissemble the switch, clean or repair it, and reinstall. Unless you are good at this type of operation, it would be simpler, less time consuming, and more certain of success to just install a new switch.
Good luck!
Anyone know where I can find a good diagram of the John deere 160 online?
ThankS!
John Deere should be able to tell you. You need your exact model number and some decks have their own model numbers on them since different decks can be used on the same tractor.
There are several factors to a belt. Length, width and pitch. Most belts are marked on the backside with a number. Often it is STDXXXXXX. "STD" being "Standard", a generic number. Some of the suppliers will have their number on them. It the number is still there. Sometimes they are only printed on them but sometimes they stamped in.
Measuring doesn't alway work because old belts can stretch some or if it broke some might be missing. And to keep the blade pulleys from slipping it is important the size is correct.
I have a john deere 160 and it seems to be slipping when I mowing can you adjust the clutch or could it be somthing else, maybe the belt slipping?
There are three slots around the circumference of the clutch. There are also three nuts from the bottom looking up. The gap measured in each of the three slots should be .012". It is not likely the clutch. It will usually either engage or not. It is most likely a belt. Check the belt for wear. The belt will wear on the sides making it narrower and riding deeper in the pulley acting like it is longer than it should be. Belts are a lot cheaper than that electric clutch. Good luck.
