I have been searching unsuccessfully for a mower belt diagram for my John Deere STX 38 lawn mower. I checked the JD parts website and found a few shop drawings, but none seemed to match my mower. Does anyone have suggestions Thanks, frustrated in GA.

John Deere STX-38 lawnmower cut up and mounted on and extended frame with the bed of a pull behind trailer mounted on the rear.

from looking at it there are just 2 springs.havnt had the deck off to get a better look.when you press in the clutch it works but the belt grabs right away.its like driving a dragster.

the belt driving the trans passes thru two idlers forward of the trans, one of the idlers is bolted to a slot allowing adj of belt. the clutch pedal needs about one inch of free travel before releasing the belt. you may want to adj brakes also.

My JD STX-38 (12.5HP command Kohler engine) starts fine when cold. It runs awhile, then quits. When hot, it won't start again. After it cools, it starts. Messes up my routine for mowing. Does this machine have points and coil? What is the electric connection right beneath the carb? Do you think this problem is electrical or something else? what maintenance do others do besides spark plug, gas filter, oil and filter, greasing. thanks for any help.

I don't believe that your engine has points. It would have to be old like from the 70's. To be sure get the engine model number off the engine and go to outdoordistributors.com and look up the engine. It will give an exploded view and a parts list.

When the engine quits you should check for spark before it cools down. If it doesn't have spark I would suspect the ignition coil. If it does have spark I would suspect that it is a fuel problem. Check the tank for debris and water. Water will look like blobs on the bottom of the tank. The most likely cause is the carburetor. I would remove it and take it apart for a good cleaning with carb cleaner. A rebuild kit should be used to put it back together. The electrical connnection on the bottom of the carb is a fuel shutoff solenoid. It should have 12 volts when the key is in the run position. If it doesn't the fuel will be shut off to the carb. Sounds like you listed all the normal maintenance. Oil change every 25 hrs. Air filter once a season or every 100 hrs, same with oil filter.

you need snap ring pliers any auto parts, hardware , or wal mart will have them..... very useful tool.... only a few bucks
