My daughter used my lawn mower and she did not engage the self propell lever and now the self propell will not work.
I believe that it rear wheel drive. When I turned it over to check it out ,It has something that kind of looks like a drive shaft between the two rear wheels.I also noticed that the rear wheels lock up when I try to pull the mower backwards. It rolls forward just fine though.
whatever IM me!
John Deere GS45 Walk Behind Mower 14 Hp Kawasaki DOHC
Hi All,
I am looking in to buy a new lawn mower but need your help to decide which one I want. I live in a townhouse and my front and backyard are not that big, so a walk behind, non-self propelled, lawn mower is perfect for me. I am looking in to Torro Personal Pace Electric Start Walk Power Mower and a John Deere Model BG20493. (Self Propelled). They both have 6.75 hp, 190 cc B & G motor, and both are electric start.
Cons of Toro:
22" cutting width
Price. (30 dollar cheaper than JD)
Warranty (3 years vs 2 years JD)
Cons of JD:
Self Propelled.
JD Name.
Green Color. :)
Over all I am leaning towards Toro but I have no idea how good Toro Mowers are. Should I choose from these or should I go to Sears and buy a Craftsmen?? I will greatly appreciate your help on this one. Thank you all in advance.
Here are the links to the JD and Toro mowers.

Whichever you buy, do not get it from Home Depot or Lowe's. If you need service or parts, they will send you to a dealer, so skip the middle man.
You mentioned you didn't want a self-propelled, but yet you mentioned 2 self-propelled units. If you try the Personal Pace from Toro, you are going to love it. It requires a little pushing from you, but it does most of the work and will never "drag you along". I love my mower with Personal Pace.
One thing about the warranty for Toro is that it is a 3 year "Guaranteed to Start" warranty. If it doesn't start in the first of second try, Toro will fix it for free.
It was mentioned about a Sears mower, but you run into a problem when it comes to getting it serviced. You have to work on their schedule, and it could be weeks if you have to send it in.
As far as the high wheeled mower, do this simple test. Get a high wheel mower and a regular mower side by side. From behind push down to lift the front wheels like you would be turning the mower around. Compare the difference in the amount required to lift the wheels off the ground.
Ultimately the decision is yours, I wish you luck with this upcoming mowing season.
Anyone know where the oil drain plug is? (this is used, I don't have the manual)
I have the mower and manual. The drain plug is under the deck. It will take a ratchet and probably an extension. It is a plug that the end of the ratchet or extension fits in. I believe it's a 3/8.
The manual says.
1) turn mower on left side.
2) put a shallow pan under mower
3) remove drain plug and lower mower over pan
It takes 20 oz of oil. Recommended 30W engine oil SF or SG class
even though i have the manual, the diagram does not provide enough information as to how to change the oil. any help would be much appreciated, especially if you have pictures!
dont have one but i think you would jack it up and the drainage plug would be on the bottom of the engine?
My father bought it used not running because the crab was dirty, the last owner left gas in the mower for 5 years) To try to prevent this from happening again my father put a fuel filter on the mower about half way though last summer. Up until three months ago it worked great. Now the filter can't get enough fuel, thus the engine stalls. When it gets enough gas it runs great and is really picky. Often it can run a long time with more than enough fuel. Sometimes it can run 5 min. Its burning gas a lot faster two. Two people have told me two things. Crab is dirty again or something is wrong with the cap. I hope to post a YouTube video on the matter so check out my channel (Roushfan5) to see if I get that up. Hope it helps.
Thanks to anyone with answers.
From your description, it sounds like there is a gas restriction. Check the vent in the gas cap to make sure it is open. If this isn't the problem, check the gas line from the tank to the filter. There may be a filter inside the tank on the end of the line, similar to a weed machine or the line itself may have some trash in it. Take the line loose from the tank and see if the glas flows out freely. Good luck.

I'm working on the transmission of my 12sb. Its a tough torq unit. I was having problems shifting into all 5 gears. I couldn't remedy the problem with a cable adjustment. The selection of 4th and 5th was very stiff. I disassembled the trans and located my problem there was was looked like a very small piece of arkansas red clay inside the gear cluster. I cleaned this out and its much better.
