I removed the old plug at end of year and noticed the threads in the engine's plug socket were worn badly and pieces of the thread were on the spark plug. Now the new plug does not turn tightly. Can this be repaired? The mower is 3 years old and otherwise in good shape.
Sparkplugs are available in the next larger thread size for Briggs engines. Call your local lawnmower shop. If you take'em the head, he'll tap it in about 10 minutes. Good Luck. =^ ) In the future,start the plug by hand.

Engine will turn over once and then stop. By bumping starter it will turn over again once and stop. Acts like too much compression. Have had this problem in the past and taken to the shop and had repaired several times. Am tired of the expense of repairs. Mower is old (2001)but runs good. Have asked the repair shop what causes this and was told carburation and valve timing. If so how do I adjust valve timing?
the overhead valve engine requires a valve adjustment occassionally, this is done by removing the valve cover, turning the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke and going past top dead center 1/4". then with a feeler guage you set the valve clearance to .004, you can purchase a repair manual from your nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer that instructs you step by step on how to do this, the manual is less than $20.00 and is a great investment for a doitselfer.
I took over the repair and replacment of the starter motor for a briggs stratton 422707, but, when I turn off the mower, the starter keeps going. Is there a wire from the ignition that is suppose to connect to the starter as well as the main red cable that is right there?

The main red cable is the only wire to the starter. I think that you will find that the soleniod is bad and sticking. You can check the ignition switch by putting it in the start position, starter unhooked, and see if you get 12volts when in start and 0 when in run or off. Locate the soleniod and when the starter continues to run, tap the soleniod and see if it stops.
Engine model number 289707. Mower model number 917.252450. It's a ride on. Seat is stuck between engine case and value stem. Can it even be repaired and if so, how?

so remove the valve spring and valve then inspeced the valae seat if it has not been damage the place it back into the hole it came out of and then comes the tricky thing
if your careful u can use a centre punch or small nail punch and then carefully go around the out side of the hole in witch u put the seat in and tap the aluminiun so that it crimps around the seat and then u will have to reseat the valve and seat by lapping it in with valve past.

It depends what you are trying to repair. If it is the engine, then you can go to the Briggs and Stratton website. If it is something else on the mower, Briggs did not manufacture it, nor do they claim to. There should be a brand on the mower somewhere to lead you in the right direction if it is something other than engine related.
Briggs did acquire Simplicity, Snapper, Ferris, and Murray in recent years. There should be links to those products on the Briggs website also.

I gave the intake valve a light lap as well and then it was on to getting the clearances right. A little sanding of the ends of the valve stems on emery paper got them both back to spec. This pic shows how the valve spring case gets flooded with oil if these mower are tilted over. It's ok to tilt them but you have to wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain. If you try starting them before that the oil will get sucked through the PCV valve in the cover and into the carb. The trick to starting these older Briggs & Strattons from cold in one pull is to tilt the mower towards the spark plug for a second or so. That primes the carby.
