What's the most dependable gas powered lawn mower out there?

I've got a really old Snapper and the recoil is shot. The repair guy told me he'd see if he could fix it, but that "they don't make 'em like this anymore". So I figured if it can't be fixed I should start looking around for a replacement mower. Thanks for your input!

The key to dependability with a push mower is in the engine since that is about all there is-an engine with a cutting blade and some wheels. If you chose a known brand, basic model with either a Honda or a Briggs and Stratton engine you can't go wrong. It's all the bells and whistle add-ons that cause maintenance problems down the road.

Can I flush 7 year old gas/oil mixture out of a push mower?

I'm a new homeowner, living on a hill. My dad gave me his old lawn boy push mower (2-cycle to keep from burning out the motor due to oil shifting), but it hasn't been started in 7 years! Buy new or repair? I'm sure I'll have to clean (or replace) the carb and air filter and spark plug which doesn't appear to be too difficult or expensive, but can I ( and how difficult is it to) flush the seven year old gas/oil mixture out of the motor? What would you (persons with experience and expertise in this area) recommend? Is it worth the time and expense to have the mower repaired? How much do you estimate the cost to be? A new lower level 4-cycle (can't seem to find 2-cycle anymore) mower is going to be pushing $200 and up. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Sears has a pump that you use with a hand drill made for oil and gas. Cost about $35.00

lawn mower repair can it be fixed?

dog chewed off rope you pull to start engine as well as punctured holes where you pump gas into engine .Can it be repaired

of course it can be repaired. the question is: is it an economical repair? and yes this is. first, you will need a couple of common tools, a flat tip and a phillips screwdriver, probably a knife or something that can cut, and maybe a simple socket and ratchet set. where the pull start rope used to be, take off that surrounding cover to access the centrifugal clutch pulley, you will need to tie a new piece if rope around this, pay attention to the hole that the rope comes out of in the cover you pulled off as this will tell you how thick of a rope you are limited to. the lenght will vary, i would say a 2 feet plus the lenght that you tied around the clutch, make sure you tie that rope good as there is alot of force needed. then run the remaining rope through that hole in the cover, tie you up some sort of handle to the end of it and voila. now this may seem easier said then done, but if you know someone who is handyman inclined, see if they can help you. as for the gas tank or filler neck, the filler neck and tank are usaully one whole piece, you might need to go to a small engine repair store and order a new one, you can get on the net and find a local briggs and straton parts dealer. BUT, if you dont want to go that route and want to band aid the tank, you can find gas tank hole sealers at any automotive parts store like autozone for instance. you would want someone to help you with going this route. I am not sure, but you might also be able to replace that rope with a new one at the briggs and straton dealer or small engine repair place.

lawn mower repair, carburator?

I have a newer push mower and has been running good. It does not seem to want to start. It is a 4 horse briggs motor. Pump the primer bulb and it will start and run the couple seconds until the gas is burned up. If you just pump the primer bulb it will stay running. I know it is good gas with no water. what is the problem?

If the engine says "quattro" or "sprint" the problem is either the carb/tank gasket or the pick up screen is clogged. Both require the removal of the tank/carb ass'y and inspection. After you remove the carb look for a warped gasket or clogged screen. Repair as required. Good luck.
