Is my lawn mower seized up?

I recently replaced the starter rope and pully assembly on my Snapper lawn mower. When I did this I changed the oil. I started it up for the first use after the repair and it seemed to work fine and I continued to mow the lawn with no problems at all. The next time I when to mow the lawn I pulled on the starter rope the engine tried to start but the starter rope stayed extended. I proceded to take the mower back apart to check the pully assembly. The spring was kinda funky and I think I fixed it, however, when I got it all back together and tried to start the mower again I could not pull the rope unless I pulled really hard and it didn't start. I checked the oil and it was empty. But I know I put oil in it. Any one know what happened? What to do? How Much its gonna cost me?

It's easy enough to test to see if the engine is seized up from lack of oil - just remove the spark plug and then pull the starter rope. If it's seized up it'll still be tight, but if it isn't seized there'll be no resistance to move the piston up and down. While you've got the spark plug out, put about one ounce of oil in the spark plug opening and give the starter rope a few pulls to lubticate the piston before you reinstall the spark plug.

If the starter rope doesn't auto-rewind, you've got a different problem. Apparently you've got a broken or disconnected spring, but you can probably pick up a starter assembly at a salvage yard for much less than what you'd pay at a small engine parts store.

If you lost all the oil, you probably "just thought" you refilled it, or you forgot to tighten the oil plug and it drained the oil.

Croinkey!! I nabbed a vertical crankshaft motor for a go cart?

I am taking small engine repair at my school 2nd period. I barely know jack about engines (i know how they work and a few basic things) but not nearly enough to work on them. I bought a 5.25hp briggs and stratton lawn mower engine from a guy not to far from me for $10. He said it worked fine last time he started it up. It looks in excellent condition and if it doesn't run, I'll fix it. I bought it for school to break it down (fix it if it is broken, which i doubt) rebuild it, and put it back together. I was planning on buying a go cart frame and simply mounting the engine on and driving around the neighborhood this summer after i take the course. I just realized after reading up on go carts a bit that I grabbed a VERTICAL crankshaft 4stroke motor. I can't put it on its side because well, it will mess it up. It it were a 2 stroke motor i could, but its a 4stroke so i cant. Any advice on how to mount that? i know it can be done but not sure how. Any good books on building go cart frames/steering/braking? all the components to a go cart. I'm trying to find out where to take a welding course so i can just make my own dam frame. But then i would need gas/brake pedals, tires (easy to pick up, heard of craigslist? lol) and a steering collumn. I could buy one (i have two jobs) but i'd much rather get down and dirty and build it myself. any advice or good books/courses to look into are appreciated. I live in blue springs, MO...so...no tech courses or welding classes in san diego lol

A good rule for mechanics is recognize a mistake, sell this motor if you can get one that does the job u want

Overseeding in Fall Can Repair, Improve Lawn - eXtension News

Released September 3, 2009

SALINA, Kan. -- Tall fescue still holds the title as the best-adapted cool-season lawn turf for the gamut of central U.S. weather extremes.

Even so, overseeding existing fescue lawns during September is a fairly common practice, according to Chip Miller, horticulturist with Kansas State University Research and Extension.

Typically, some homeowners are hoping to improve their lawn’s thickness or fill in bare spots, following a stressful growing season. Others are trying to improve lawn quality by mixing in a new, improved fescue variety with the old standby they’ve already got -- Kentucky 31 or K-31 tall fescue.

They may or may not succeed in improving their lawn, Miller said. Most often, success depends on the seed variety they select and their ability to avoid several serious mistakes.

Insider Tips When Facing A Lawn Mower Repair

Insider Tips When Facing A Lawn Mower Repair

Even lawn equipment that comes from the best manufacturers will normally require some type of lawn mower repair, whether replacing a part or completing a tune up. Most often, repairs are necessary because of lack of maintenance to their push mower or riding lawnmower.

Naturally, prevention is much better than the cure. By doing maintenance checks regularly on your lawn and garden tools and equipment, such as before winter storage and before spring usage, you may be able to save yourself from some costly repairs. It is also a good idea to scrape the underneath of the mower and use an air compressor to clean the air filter and carburetor.
