Mower Deck Repair

how to repair my MTD riding mower lower deck belt?

I've replaced new blades. the belt is good on the lower deck. When I engage the handle to cut, the front engine pulley produces smoke. it spins as it should, and the 2 rear idler pulleys spin also. Why is the engine pulley not engaging the belt correctly? Is it that the Belt keeper pins are out of alignment?
I have searched the web with no success. I know there is a simple answer to this problem.

The belt guides keep the belt on when the deck is disengaged. Are you sure that the blades turn freely? They have to spin smoothly and freely. The spindles have bearings which could be worn and binding.

REPAIR KIT FOR1996 MTD RIDING MOWER DECK?

OWN A 1996 MTD 12.5 HP/38" CUT RIDER....ONE OF THE BLADE PULLEYS FINALLY RUSTED OUT & FELL THRU... TRIED TO FIND A REPLACEMENT DECK...(TOO EXPENSIVE) IS THERE AN AFTERMARKET REPAIR KIT FOR THIS ? the newer models have an aluminum brace holding the pulleys in place..CAN I PURCHASE THESE & WHERE ?

I doubt there is a repair kit but an innovative repairman should be able to weld a patch in the deck and replace the pulley and bearings. I would have him add metal to strengthen the other pulleys at the same time. If one died the others are probably ready to fail. They all have the same amount of wear and tear.

How do I mount of an older (90's) craftsman lawn mower deck on a riding lawn mower?

The lawn mower was given to me, then i got the deck later from the same people, but it needed some work, i have repaired the stuff that was wrong with the deck, then went to mount it but the people that gave it to me said they threw away all the bolts and such so im not sure how it goes on the lawn mower and i cant find a picture or any information any place on-line. if you have a picture or any information regarding this please respond.

Also, look for a local lawnmower repair shop to find some of the things you need. They usually have some old stuff in back such as quik-release pins and other things they might even give to you , or at least give you a good deal on.

Please help all you riding lawn mower repair men?

My husband past away last year and now its up to me when I break something to repair it. I live in the country so I can't just go get something repaired. I was mowing I hit a rock it jammed between the blade and the deck It stopped running, I knocked the rock out I don't see anything broke like a belt or anything but it won't start, it won't even turn over its like its dead. HELP

most riders have a safety switch for the deck . so first disconnect the plug wire and look under the hood on most mowers if you look at the arm that ingages the belt below the steering wheel you will find this switch if you hit something hard enough to jam it then u may have relocated this switch .. as I dont know the exact year, make or model i cant tell you exact but as a mower mech. that would be my first place too look .. e mail me if i can help more i will try!!!!

Mower deck stopped working?

I have an older Toro Wheel Horse riding mower. Today I went up a steep hill too quickly and I heard a quick snap or cracking noise, and it now appears that the mower blades no longer spins on the deck. The belt is still in place but it doesn't seem that tight anymore. When I turn on the PTO (Power Take Off) switch it doesn't engage the mower blades. I am a total repair newbie, as I just got this mower about a month ago. When I manually pull on the belt the mower blade will still spin.

Hopefully this is an easy fix-
PLEASE HELP!

Sounds like the spring on the tensioner pulley has come off. You may have to remove the deck to locate it and get it back on. Sounds like you have an electric clutch on the mower so the spring would be holding the pulley tight against the belt all the time. The spring is usually 3-4 inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter. You may not have lost it, it could still be there or it could have broken. Look for the tensioning pulley and it should be obvious where the spring goes. The tensioning pulley will be on an arm that swings freely if the spring is not attached.

Blog Reading 101, Trash Collection, and Other Missionary Thrills

Before I begin with what I really want to say today, there is something I’ve been meaning to write about but haven’t yet taken the time to do so. So here it is. I hope someone finds it helpful. I’ll call it “Blog Reading 101.” Several people have commented that they don’t see the pictures anymore. If that is the case, they are also not reading the entire blog entry and are often missing the main point of the posting. So, you experienced web browsers, hang with me while I quickly bring everyone else up to speed. When you come to the words “Read More” in blue with a little blue arrow pointing to the right, click on it and you can read more.

The purpose of the “Read More” link is to keep the home page of a blog from getting too long to manage. Many blogs have important information at the bottom and no one wants to spend five minutes scrolling down to that information. For example, if you are curious about the current weather conditions here, scroll down to the bottom of this page and you will find a link to a weather report.

How To Inspect Lawn Mower Deck Belts and Bearings

Always use gloves and safety glasses when doing any kind of repair or maintenance on your lawn mower. Then, remove the spark plug, so that your engine doesn't start accidentally. Being safety conscious will prevent injury and damage to people and machines. When you turn your lawn mower over, always make sure the side that has the air filter is pointing up. This will prevent your lawn mower's oil from leaking into the air filter. Never turn your lawn mower over more than 90¡. Next, you should give your lawn mower a good wash. Using soap and water, and possibly a pressure washer that uses less than 1000 PSI, will help clean away dirt. Make sure that you wash the dirt and water away from, and not into, your lawn mower's bearings. You want to ensure your lawn mower's bearings do not become worn and are properly lubricated. Keeping the underside of your lawn mower clean and free of debris will help prevent rust, and prevent fire hazards, which can occur when grass leaves, and grease combine in a hot engine.
