What should I charge as a Small Engine Repair guy?
cumming small engine repair

I'm going to start my own business type thing for small engine repair. Like Lawn mowers, snowmobiles, lawn tractors and things like that. And I was wondering what a reasonable price for labor might I charge...I've never charged anyone for this kind of thing before so I have no idea what to charge per hour or half an hour or whatever....any suggestions?

I suggest going to one or more similar type of repair shop not in your vicinity. I think they are obliged by law to have their prices posted. It will also give you an idea of what type of disclaimer you might need. Also because you will not become a competitor, the owner of the shop might be able to give you some valuable advice. Good luck in your new business!

Small Engine repair question...12hp-1 cyl riding mower, can you help?

I have a 1992 Simplicity 12hp Briggs IC engine that acts like it's seized up. It stalled calmly, like out of gas-but not- and wouldn't restart for a while. It did slowly restart about 10 minutes later, then stalled again after about 10 seconds. Now the starter wants to engage, but the engine wont turn over.
The oil is low, but not fatally low. The battery appears to be fine, as it restarted it after it died the first time...so I don't think it's dead.

I has been a great running amazing engine up to this point. It started this spring after only about 1 full second of turning the key...so it's not like it has been a long time coming.

Anyway, is it easy/hard to tear part and see if it's seized...if so, how do I fix it? How much would a shop charge (ballpark) to fix?

Thanks a million.

Yes you should pop the sparkplug and look inside the hole if possible for metal shavings. Look at the sparkplug and see if there are any metal or aluminum shavings. Grab the crankshaft and turn it. Before you tear down the entire motor mayby you could just pop the head off and take a look inside the cylinder, mayby a valve come loose and locked the motor up. If the motor is actually seized up and you manage to break it loose dont think its alright to run again because most likely your rings are fried and it will destroy you cylinder beyond repair. Most likely the oil changes were neglected and over time the oil collected moisture and slowly wore the motor down till it seized. If you did it yourself you could prob do it for $125. If you had a shop do it 275.00 and a new or good used 12 hp motor $350-400.12 hp briggs should be a dime a dozen "used" so try a junk yard. Seeings its 15 yrs old you may be in the market for a new one ,check out ebay for a new or used one because you could prob find one for a resonable price. All in all it really sucks and if you lived in the same state as me i would loan you mine for a while too keep up the lawn but mine is just the "cheap" hydrostatic drive and not the "true" hydrolic drive. So it prob wouldnt fit in your "standards" of life. But if you are willing to step down to my level and drive a Deer i just may be of some help. Any way good luck ,live well and prosper.

Question for repair on small engine?

I broke the rope on my 10 hp lawn mower. Can I buy rope from the hardware store or do I need to buy the starter repair kit the rope is all that broke the handle is still good and reuseable

You can get the rope from a hardware store. Take a piece of the old one so that you get the right diameter. Get good quality stuff so that it lasts. Make sure that when you replace it you wind the spring a bit so that the rope pulls back in.

What dealer has obsolete lawn mower parts?

I have a lawn mower repair shop. When I took it over many years ago, I discovered a LOT of obsolete parts - most of them are small parts, like condensers & contacts. I want to find a dealer of obsolete parts and hopefully sell these to them.

Do an Ebay search and see if you can find anyone selling these parts, then you can see what their selling for and if they might buy them from you. Or just sell them on Ebay yourself.

Good Luck
