Hydros are the most reliable because there is no gearbox or belts to wear out. They cost substantially more than belt drives but if you are going to use it hard then the hydro will pay for itself in the long run. Hydros are usually faster as well.
I've used belt drives (gear shift) for years with no problems with the gears, but the drive belts stretch eventually and need replacing ($$$).
I've never heard of an automatic on a mower.
In the US and Europe Robomow has sold many units at 1650 dollars or more but in Australia over 5 yrs less than 200. As an Aussie, from experience living overseas we dont spend as much on things like that compared to other countries. Would anyone buy an automatic mower for $1300 or is this still too much? Given that the majority of the Eastern seaboard has been in the grip of the worst and longest drought in more than a century, not many of us have lawns left to mow. Those of us that do, certainly wouldn't waste that sort of money on a lawn mower.
Do any of you have one and if so would you recommend them? Thinking of getting one but not sure if they are just a bit of a gimmick.
Apparently they are safe as the blades stop if they collide with something and also you dont have to dispose of the clippings as it mulches it.
I always worried about the neighborhood kids picking it up and running off with it.
Also, you have to bury perimeter wire like you would for a wireless dog fence. An edger will do this.
