I have this old lawn mower and I am looking to use the engine for a go kart. It is the "Snapper big six" 6HP engine for a walk-behind mower by briggs and stratton. I am looking for a site where I can go to get the basics down about this mower and hopefully read a diagram about all the parts not only of the engine but of the parts of the mower too. Can anyone find a page where I can learn this? Any other tips about making go-karts!? Thank you!

My lawn mower, "Weed Eater 21 B&S 550 series will not work. When i pull the starting cord, it begins to start, but dies as if the gas is not getting through or something. Yes, the lawn mower i have is a gas engine one.
how old is the gas? it could be bad. try draining the tank and putting in some fresh gas.On top of engine there should be big flat head screw. take that out and remove air filter and voila' there is your carb
the NGK spark plug for the Briggs&Stratton will be similar to Rj19lm will this cause any harm?
take the spark plug to your nearest dealer and find out what spark plug options you have, but I think I have seen those in Briggs and Hondas alike. If there is a NGK replacement available, you certainly can use it without causing any harm.
MURRAY 20" 4.0hp Quatro Briggs & Stratton. The mower fluctuates when it is running and i was told to remove the carburator and give it a good cleaning. i do not have the manual for the mower. Thank you.

I have a briggs and stratton lawn mower. I've owned for about a year. It has never started easily, and now will not start at all. I am guessing that the carburetor needs to be cleaned. Can anyone provide instructions specifically for briggs and stratton lawn mowers (not sure of the model, bought it last year for about $140) regarding how to remove and clean the carburetor, and what the other causes may be?
Check and see if gas is in the carburetor bowl. If not the check valve is stuck a common problem with gunk build up. When you have it upside down it's under the float. Take the float off and get to it. The check valve is held with small wire parts so take your time and remember how it is held in place. You do have to put it back the same way you found it.
Before I did anything I would check for spark. Then I would pull the plug out and put two teaspoons of gas in the engine. Put the plug back and it will start and run most of the time. Only do that on a cold engine for your safety.

After substantial experinece in helping people in the aftermath of hurricanes, I saw that hurricane Ike was about one week out from my house inland and decided I would not be one of those poor saps without a generator when the power went out. I went to every store around 50 miles of my house before I finally found a generator. It happened to be briggs and stratton elite series with 8000 running watts. It was the only one left and I knew it, so I bought it reluctantly from a tractor supply store in Texas. Well, after a week of having my power out from hurrican Ike I was thrilled with it. Heck, I was even able to watch dvd’s on my TV, and that was while I had the comfort of knowing my refrigerator/freezer was running along with fans to keep the heat down. It is dirt simple to use, it is rugged, and the only minor complaint I would make is it about as loud as a riding lawn mower. That really isn’t terrible though considering that it is a pretty powerful generator as “portable” units go. Thanks Briggs and Stratton, you never let me down.

Well is the oil plug under the deck . or above it . this is a bit messy job . but if you have it in you take a small ribber hose run into the oil fill spout . and into the side of a jug one that wont colaps . then a vacume to the mouth of the jug . suck out the oil . and the gas . now under the carb there is a bowl . under that bowl is a nut . carefully remove the nut . then tap the bowl with the but of screwdriver . be careful there is a rubber gasket and you dont want to rip it. clean the bowl well and the nut you removed is a hole . use a bread tie to clean out the hole .dont rush this task . and pot it together well . dont forget the points . they rust up . remove the pull cover there is a wheel turn the wheel and see where it hits the points . this is a magnet point. notice the gap between the point and the magnate . when you replace the point you will need a business card . place it in between the connection before tightening the points back down . remove it and clean the area that connects with sand paper. DO NOT TURN THE MOWER UPSIDE DOWN and if you must tilt it tilt it back with the handle on the ground . remember this when you need to sharpen the blades. spray some oil on the throttle box to make sure it doesnt stick on you. you will see the wires moving back and forth behind the carb. but dont forget to clean the small hole out from the nut it has like a point tip on the end of it . this is the fuel control. so clean it well.
