I have a briggs and stratton lawn mower. I've owned for about a year. It has never started easily, and now will not start at all. I am guessing that the carburetor needs to be cleaned. Can anyone provide instructions specifically for briggs and stratton lawn mowers (not sure of the model, bought it last year for about $140) regarding how to remove and clean the carburetor, and what the other causes may be?
Check and see if gas is in the carburetor bowl. If not the check valve is stuck a common problem with gunk build up. When you have it upside down it's under the float. Take the float off and get to it. The check valve is held with small wire parts so take your time and remember how it is held in place. You do have to put it back the same way you found it.
Before I did anything I would check for spark. Then I would pull the plug out and put two teaspoons of gas in the engine. Put the plug back and it will start and run most of the time. Only do that on a cold engine for your safety.

it is warm then it runs fine. I have replaced the spark plug, the fuel line, and cleaned the carburetor..
By "cleaned the carburetor" you did clean all the passages including the metering jet.If you didn't try running some injector cleaner through it(B12,Seafoam, etc,) just add it to the gas and see if that helps(from any auto supply store.
head removed piston no carbon and rings /valves ok.could it be carburettor jets or ???? any ideas please
It's not likely to be an internal problem.
If it's running rough and emitting black smoke that suggests rich fuel mixture.
I tend to agree with bardic, check the choke is opening correctly.
Also try running without the air filter to see whether a blocked/dirty filter is the cause.
It starts up and runs, but when you try to move it over the grass it shuts down. My dad believes that there is something wrong with the carburetor, that maybe there's not enough gas getting to the engine in order for the blades to start mowing the grass. Any ideas on how to fix this?
We looked at it today, it seems that the springs on the carburetor are messed up. It's an old model, and the springs are what adjust the flow of gas. Perhaps if we could find a diagram of the carburetor to see how the springs are hooked up, then maybe we could fix them. Any ideas?
The air filter is clean.
Make sure no water in the carb bowl and gas tank.
The lawn mower is a Briggs & Stratton, and was bought last year brand new and I bought the warrenty on it. I would take it in immediately, but last week we went through a period where it was raining every day. When it finally stopped raining I could not get out and mow because of my work schedule. While I was working my lawn was growing. Today, first thing, I got out the mower and it would not start. It sounds like it wants to start, but can't.
After doing everything I could think of to fix it, which was not much, I went to the corner store to get the newspaper and a cup of coffe. While I was there I saw a bottle of STP Fuel Injector & Carburetor cleaner. I read the bottle, and said "Hmmmm."
I bought it, and am now afraid to use it. My question is is it safe to use on a push lawnmower, and if so how much??
I would love to get the mower to mow just long enough to mow my jungle, and then I'll glady take it to get fixed properly.
I am doing a happy dance. I had already tried everything you three told me to do...I am no novice at lawn mowing. Including the emptying of the old gas and adding new. I guess after all I did to it, the lawn mower just needed to sit quietly for a while.
Thank you all soo much for your prompt help :)
As you young whippersnappers say, "Yahoo answers rocks!!!"
Rereading what I wrote, I forgot to say the lawnmower starts!!!! Started with the first tug :)
It is very strange considering how it did not want to start earlier, but I am not complaining :)
Again, Thank you all.
Glad you got it going..... but anything you add to the gas.... will not help it to start (stp is basically mostly kerosene anyway), about the only additives I use(other then fuel stabilizer....hope you use that?!!) is marvel mystery oil..... to get rid of the stp, dump it in your car.
Where is the mower stored? In a dry place I hope.... tarps are ok, but if they can't vent.... condensation will form and be almost like getting rained on. Keep the engine in a good dry place..... use a good fuel stabilizer (like stabil) if storing the gas or mower over a month. Be sure to check the oil often and change it every 25 hours.... straight HD-30 is fine above 40 degrees F. under that use a multi weight like 5w-30 or just use a synthetic all year round. Change the air filter once a year, more in dusty conditions and of course clean and gap the plug once a year (.30)

My dad 'kindly' gave me his 25+ year-old Snapper mower for my new house, which has my first lawn. I know he hasn't started that thing in 15 years, because I was probably the last one to use it when I was still cutting his grass. I accepted because, well, you don't look a mechanical gift horse in the mouth. Worst case scenario, I'd have a little small engine project to keep me busy - like I need another project.
A couple days ago, I was looking for info on the thing, checking out prices for parts and carb rebuild kits and such, and got a wild idea. Went out to the garage. Check the gas - almost empty, but it actually smelled like gas, and not varnish. Hunh. Check the oil - a touch low, so I topped it off. Pull the plug - pretty clean, I hit it with a wire brush for good measure.
