I have this old lawn mower and I am looking to use the engine for a go kart. It is the "Snapper big six" 6HP engine for a walk-behind mower by briggs and stratton. I am looking for a site where I can go to get the basics down about this mower and hopefully read a diagram about all the parts not only of the engine but of the parts of the mower too. Can anyone find a page where I can learn this? Any other tips about making go-karts!? Thank you!
You can get all the information on the engine at outdoordistributors.com. Type in the model number and you will get an exploded view with part numbers.

Engine will turn over once and then stop. By bumping starter it will turn over again once and stop. Acts like too much compression. Have had this problem in the past and taken to the shop and had repaired several times. Am tired of the expense of repairs. Mower is old (2001)but runs good. Have asked the repair shop what causes this and was told carburation and valve timing. If so how do I adjust valve timing?
the overhead valve engine requires a valve adjustment occassionally, this is done by removing the valve cover, turning the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke and going past top dead center 1/4". then with a feeler guage you set the valve clearance to .004, you can purchase a repair manual from your nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer that instructs you step by step on how to do this, the manual is less than $20.00 and is a great investment for a doitselfer.
have tried using gasoline, paint thinner and can get most off the valves but the engine inside is really hard to clean. Tried wire brush but still cannot get everywhere and i think that is what is making my valves stick. I have plenty of new oil in the bottom of the engine. Is there something I can spray into the engine?
If your valves are sticking you may have left the mower out in the weather. A worn valve guide will also make it stick. By taking the head off and the small cover on the side of the engine where you see the breather hose come out you can take the valve out and clean them on a wire wheel. When I put them back in I use a little STP on the valve stem. Wal_Mart sells a small engine repair manual. I don't know how good it is, but it should help you. You can try to library too for a manual.
When I pull the rope that turns the fly wheel, it sticks when trying to retract the rope. I have to retract and detract to get it free. Do i have to lubricate something on the fly wheel?
The engine is a 3.5hp Briggs and Stratton Classic II engine.
Lubrication will help but it sounds like the spring under the fly wheel has sliped out of place. Not to hard to fix if the cover has screws. If not you will have to take it to a repair shop. If it is a one piece cover over the entire motor it can be tricky to put back together.
it is warm then it runs fine. I have replaced the spark plug, the fuel line, and cleaned the carburetor..
By "cleaned the carburetor" you did clean all the passages including the metering jet.If you didn't try running some injector cleaner through it(B12,Seafoam, etc,) just add it to the gas and see if that helps(from any auto supply store.

After substantial experinece in helping people in the aftermath of hurricanes, I saw that hurricane Ike was about one week out from my house inland and decided I would not be one of those poor saps without a generator when the power went out. I went to every store around 50 miles of my house before I finally found a generator. It happened to be briggs and stratton elite series with 8000 running watts. It was the only one left and I knew it, so I bought it reluctantly from a tractor supply store in Texas. Well, after a week of having my power out from hurrican Ike I was thrilled with it. Heck, I was even able to watch dvd’s on my TV, and that was while I had the comfort of knowing my refrigerator/freezer was running along with fans to keep the heat down. It is dirt simple to use, it is rugged, and the only minor complaint I would make is it about as loud as a riding lawn mower. That really isn’t terrible though considering that it is a pretty powerful generator as “portable” units go. Thanks Briggs and Stratton, you never let me down.
