Where would i find the oil drain plug for an XRS Quantnum engine.
It is on the under side of the mower next to the shaft. undo the spark plug wire first. true the mower on it side undo to oil plug and set mower on a drain pan to drain the oil. after all the oil is out turn the mower back on it side and replace the plug and set mower back on the wheels. fill with oil and wait a little before starting, because some oil may have run in to the intake and you want it to drain back into the crankcase.
This video show the steps to drain the oil from a Bamp;S 6.5 lawn mower

This lawn mower I bought it from sears and of course is a craftsman. The engine is a briggs and stratton 550 series engine.Used it for less than an hour. I know these lawn mower consume 1 ounce per hour per cylinder. Today when I started the engine it did a weird noise like if there was to many oil in the piston. The carb is clean and it has the correct amount of oil. This smoke lasts for about 5 minutes. Also this lawn mower is always covered. also when you start it it throws out smoke and when you are going to see the dipstick it throughs out smoke by there. I think it could be the piston rings or a blown head gasket.
The lawn mower is new. The air filter is clean. the spark plug is full of oil. Today when i started it you could here there was more than gasoline in the piston chamber. The engine do use about one ounce per hour. It even says so on the briggs and stratton website.
Also when it burns the oil it smells a lot.
also when you turn it off it throughs little by little smoke out of the muffler.
Eventually the smoke stops? what is it?
Plus here the warranty most of the times makes it worst.
Thanks for everybodies help but the problem was that the oil was to thin and thats why the engine burned oil. Thanks any way.
If your engine is consuming an ounce of oil an hour your rings are worn and could produce smoke. Of course too, if it the mower is parked or tilted at a steep angle it will smoke also.
have tried using gasoline, paint thinner and can get most off the valves but the engine inside is really hard to clean. Tried wire brush but still cannot get everywhere and i think that is what is making my valves stick. I have plenty of new oil in the bottom of the engine. Is there something I can spray into the engine?
If your valves are sticking you may have left the mower out in the weather. A worn valve guide will also make it stick. By taking the head off and the small cover on the side of the engine where you see the breather hose come out you can take the valve out and clean them on a wire wheel. When I put them back in I use a little STP on the valve stem. Wal_Mart sells a small engine repair manual. I don't know how good it is, but it should help you. You can try to library too for a manual.

sae refers to the society of automotive engineers... not the oil.
DO NOT USE A NON DETERGENT (ND-30) briggs does not recommend, nor sell non detergent.
USE a HD-30, that's a high detergent straight 30 weight above 40 degrees F. Use a multi weight conventional like 5w-30 or 10w-30 below 40.
OR just use a 5w-30 or 10w-30 SYNTHETIC all year round.
Change it every 25 hours. This engine takes 20 ounces maximum.
AS for using non detergent.... this oil is very cheap (appealing to the cheapskates that don't care they are killing the engine) it basically lets the engine get sludged up. A high detergent oil (be it multiweight or straight) will keep the engine clean inside. These engines run very hot, far hotter then a liquid cooled engine. They will break the oil down in nothing flat. SO you use a straight HD-30 in the hot weather or a multi weight synthetic to withstand the heat, and keep the oil from sludging.
BE SURE to use a NAME BRAND!!
Also you do not use non detegent oil to break in a engine. And you can use synthetic in a new engine... this is all old timer beliefs. Same for 20w-50. heavier is not better.... heavier oils like 20w-50 is for a old worn out engine, using oil at a high rate.... 20w-50 is in fact so thick, it'll tend not to get past the upper piston rings and cause more wear in general, to tight clearances.

Well, the one I bought must have been handled pretty roughly as one of the wheel brackets was broken when I got the mower out of the box. I called the customer service (mower, not Amazon) and they were worthless. Bought a new bracket and put it on (about $10, inc. $7 to ship — still easier than taking mower to authorized dealer). The mower smoked badly on startup, so we’ll just have to see what the future holds. Jury definitely out right now.
