Briggs And Stratton Lawn Mower Repair

Answers

How to start a 14 HP OHV Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine?

Engine will turn over once and then stop. By bumping starter it will turn over again once and stop. Acts like too much compression. Have had this problem in the past and taken to the shop and had repaired several times. Am tired of the expense of repairs. Mower is old (2001)but runs good. Have asked the repair shop what causes this and was told carburation and valve timing. If so how do I adjust valve timing?

the overhead valve engine requires a valve adjustment occassionally, this is done by removing the valve cover, turning the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke and going past top dead center 1/4". then with a feeler guage you set the valve clearance to .004, you can purchase a repair manual from your nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer that instructs you step by step on how to do this, the manual is less than $20.00 and is a great investment for a doitselfer.

What is wrong with my Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine-- It starts but speeds up and then down as I mow?

It starts ok but it speeds up and down as I mow. It won't just run at a single speed. I hear neighbor's mower's engine's do this after a few years of use. Is there anything I can do besides the usual cleaning of air filter, oil change, spark plug is new as is the new blade. This is the third summer it has been used. Local repair shops don't seem to know what to do. One guy put a wire through the butterfly to hold it open.
Let me clarify my question: As I mow, the engine speeds up and down, up and down, up and down. This is one of the newer engines with no adjustments and a prime button to push before cranking. As I said, the neighbor's mower's engines do this too. No one around here knows what to do. We have two of our older mowers in the garage which have developed this same problem. We replaced them for this reason. You can mow with it, but it speed up fast, and then down slow, up and down in a cycle as you push it.. The cable is lubricated and is opening the butterfly valve open as usual. It's just this speeding and slowing of rpm's that no one know about. Thanks so much for your help!

It does sound like the Governor is messed up. That wire in the butterfly is that the governor and if so that's probably not a good idea. The engine should have the governor open and close depending on how hard it sucks the air and gas in and a spring at the right tension has to be working. I would look into that spring on the governor.

The governor spring fell off my Briggs and Stratton 3.5 lawn mower. How do I put it back on?

I do not have a manual. There is no warranty that I am aware of. There is no man around to help me. It's Saturday so the repair shop is closed. I need to get my lawn mowed...it's fixing to rain. Help!

The governor spring goes from a lever on the side of the engine to an anchor point. Usually there are several holes in the lever, start with one around the middle. The anchor point is usually a small sheet metal tab with a hole, but might be something else. Hook one end of the spring into the middle hole on the lever, and look for the anchor point on either side of the lever, just far enough to where you have to stretch the spring a little to get to it. It helps to use a needle nose pliers to grab the end as you hook it, as it is sometimes in a tight place. If, after you put it on, the spring is rubbing on anything, it is probably on backwards.
If the spring is missing the hook on one end, that means it broke off. Use the needle nose pliers to bend a new hook, and strech the spring a little to compensate for the lost length.

does anyone know where to go to get a maintenance/service repair manual for a snapper lawn mower??

i just got a real good deal on a commercial snapper riding mower that needed some rear end work done on it. otherwise the engine and mower are in excellent shape. i need to get a repair/maintenance manual for the mower and the briggs&stratton ohv engine. i do not want one of the generic/ all mower manuals that clymer sells!! i want one that is specific for my mower!! any help????????????thanks!!!!!!

Go to the Snapper website at:

http://www.snapper.com/#

In the upper right hand corner click on "publications". In the window that pops up, enter the information (model number etc.) that is asked for and you will be rewarded with PDF copies of the manuals you need.

Good luck with your repair.

How do you repair/fix an old coil on a b&s lawn mower engine that hasn't run in years (coil worked last use)?

Have an old mower with a briggs and stratton engine. I can't get the coil to produce spark. most of the time, i just sand the rust off the coil and the flywheel but that doesn't seem to work this time. Are there any other spots that need to be cleaned or any wires that need fixed?

There should be a little ground wire attached to it that was bolted down with one of the two bolts that hold the coil on, sand it shinny and also the location where it bolts to.... Try that, Also when you attach the coil back use one card from a deck of playing cards to guage the distance from the flywheel, The spacing off the flywheel could play big part in it not firing, also sand the flywheel

A push mower for the small and weak - Briggs amp; Stratton Quattro ...

When I lived on a military post, they had strict regulations about lawn mowing. My husband is a strapping lad, but he couldn't always mow the lawn right when it needed to be done, and it's expensive to pay someone else to do it! We didn't have our own mower, so I borrowed one all the time. I'm a little person at 5 feet 2 inches tall, and I do not have a lot of upper body strength. The mowers I was borrowing were SO heavy and hard to push! Not only that, when you pulled the string to start them, it had to be pulled WAY out, and my arms weren't long enough to do it in one fluid motion. That was the worst part. Sometimes it would take 10-15 minutes to start the thing because I had to pull the string and jump backwards at the same time to be able to pull the string long enough. It's a real skill.

Poulan 20inch 450 Series Briggs Stratton Gas Powered | Lawn Mower ...

I purchased this machine to mow grass and mulch leaves as they lay on the lawn. While it cut the grass adequately, the dust from the dry leaves clogged the carburator after only three uses. The dealer’s mechanic stated Poulan carburators often clogged. The manufacturer’s rep characterized the mulching use as “abuse” and said it was not covered by warranty. I should note I used a Snapper mower under the same circumstances for over twenty-five years.
