Lawn Mower Air Filter

why is my lawn mower air filter getting clogged with oil?

My craftsman 7hp self propelled lawn mower keeps getting oil stuck in the air filter. I bought a new air filter and it ran fine for 30 minutes, started smoking and shut off. I checked and the air filter was clogged with oil again. I was able to use it with out the air filter to finish my lawn. What could be the problem, how could I fix it, and is it bad to run it with out the filter?

1 too much oil in crank case
2 engine is worn out...bad ring[s] bad valve guide[s]
3 it can run with no filter...its on the way to repair shop/junk yard any way

The lawn mower air filter went bad REALLY FAST (2 uses). Why would this happen?

I have a fairly standard lawn that a mow with a push mower. The lawn wraps around the house and generally takes about 15 min max to completely mow. Anyhow, I recently put in a new air filter and mowed the lawn using it twice. But when I tried to mow today, the mower coughed and died. I took out the filter and checked it out: it's partially-grey and oily. I was able to start the mower perfectly without the filter, and it sounded fine and ran fine (I didn't mow without the filter... I just started it without the filter to check that it would start and run, then once it did, I turned it right off.)

Anyhow, this seems odd. Should an air filter go bad that fast? Is something wrong with the mower? Thanks.

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation..... this is not what any mower has.... that tube comes from the valve cover/breather.... it lets the internal crankcase pressure out, but not the oil...... (lets the vapors out as well) when it gets gunked up, or worn out, it'll spew oil into the air filter.... don't try and clean it or rebuild it, better to replace it and see if it helps, they don't cost much.

Lawn Mower - Air Filter Question?

I have a 5hp Toro gas lawn mower, a few weeks ago the air filter (a paper rectangular one) and its plastic casing fell off in front of the mower and I ran over it, causing the bits to go all over the lawn. Needless to say I need to buy a new air filter and plastic casing for this.
Before this accident, I needed to take off the filter and spray inside behind it that metal part that has a little eyelit with Quickstart to get it going.
I have been operating the mower for about a month or so now without the air filter, always spraying Quickstart into that mystery part to get it going.
Last night I replaced the spark plug and bought a new air filter. The filter isn't on yet as I also need to find where to buy the plastic casing to fix it into place. I noticed that the mower will start if I tip it forward a bit so a bit of the gas or whatever is behind that mystery metal part where the air filter should be gets there then I pull the plug.
My questions are:
1. What type of damage have I done by operating without the air filter?
2. What is that metal thing behind the air filter? Again, the best description is a metal eyelit. Must have something to do with gas as making that wet starts the engine.
3. What does Quickstart do? I got this mower for free and the lady who gave it to me (I don't know her) said the problem with the mower starting was the air filter and I always needed to spray behind it with the Quickstart. What's the deal with this? Any idea?
Any help or suggestions would be awesome

Thanks

The metal piece behind the air filter is the choke. The damage you do by running without the air filter is internal to the cylinder and the piston. It is increased wear and then loss of compression. The need of the quick start says the unit has a priming problem. Take it to a service center and get a tune up. Good Luck.

Air Filter on Lawn Mower?

The cylinder case on my lawn mower that hold the air filter has broken clips and keeps falling off. Where can I find a replacement case for my lawn mower?

Try the place where you purchased the mower: however I'd Google the lawnmower brand and look for replacement parts. In most parts list they have pictures, give it a try.
