need to buy a new lawn mower, thinking of one with an electric start, good idea or not

It all depends on you. I'll list a few things to help you decide

Cons:
1.) Its another thing that can go wrong.
2.) You need to have an electrical plug near where you store the mower. (At least on the Toro and Lawnboy units)
3.) Risk of the gears involved in the starting going bad.
4.) Over time the battery will fail, and it is expensive to be replaced.

Pros:
1). No string to pull!
2.) There is a recoil start as a back-up.
3.) No throwing out your back to start.
4.) Prime, turn the key and go!

The battery should last for at least 5 years or more. On the Toro and LawnBoy units, you plug it into the wall once a month, overnight. They do not charge themselves.

My personal recommendation would be the Toro 20074 Recycler w/ Personal Pace and Electric start. You can find your nearest Toro dealer by using the dealer locator on http://www.toro.com or they have this unit at Home Depot for $399. It has a 2 year Guaranteed to Start warranty with it.

My 22quot; self-propelled Murry push mower that modified to use a drill to start the mower instead of the pull cord.

The directions says to plug a fuse into the battery. I cannot figure out what they are talking about. There is nothing in the box that looks like a fuse. Am I missing something? Do you now anything about a lawnboy self propelled lawn mower with electric start. Did someone at the store take the fuse out of the box? Where would it be? Am I just stupid cause I cannot find anything that looks like a fuse?

See if this helps - I just Googled Lawn Boy. The fuse is amber colored plastic. This shows where it goes.

We had a self propelled one ,but my wife found it to hard to push..Any suggestions would be appricated...(Walking Mower)

The newer electrics and battery models are lightweight and easy to push. RScott

Try the Toro model 20074. It is a 3-in-1 mower (baggs, mulches, and side discharges), has electric start, and has the best self propelled system on the market, the Toro Personal Pace. It never goes faster than you. I love mine!

electricity is conneted. motor seems fine. however i find that switch to control how much elctricity that goes through might be a problem ? starting a month ago, there seem to be power issue, it took shaking and lot of wrestling for it to start. once it starts, it worked fine. but today it was just dead.

Is this a battery powered mower? or one run off an extension cord? Brand and Model # ?

Ordinarily, I'd start off with a list of questions about the power supply, but since youve told us youve had problems over the last month, and 'shaking and wrestling' got it to working, I'd have to say it sounds like a short, most likely in the switch circuit.

I'd start at the handle switch itself... open it up to see if there are any loose connections. If that's good, then go down the wire, and check those connections. Check the wiring itself with a multimeter, to see if there is a break in it.

Check your owner's manual for a circuit breaker location, and see if it needs to be reset.
Most manufacturer's have a phone number or website, you can contact to help troubleshoot the malfunction too.
