Lawn Mower Gas Cap

Answers

Why does gas splash out of small holes in lawn mower gas cap ?
Gasing up an lawn mower.

It is a new Sears push mower. Under the cap is a rubber seal or diaphragm with holes in it. The holes line up so that gas splashes out as I'm mowing. I understand the tank must be vented, but don't want to waste gas.

When filling up the mower use the same principal as recommended by gas station when filling up the vehicle tank. Don't top it off. You need the holes to vent the fumes and you need some space in the tank to allow that to happen.

What is it that draws a mouse to have babies under the distributor cap of my gas powered lawn mower?

As gas prices rise, I mow my lawn less and less often (not at all during dry spells.) Last year, after a few weeks of rainy weather, it finally dried up enough to mow. I gassed up the mower, primed it, and pulled the starter cord. It was so hard to pull out I thought the engine had froze up or something. Finally after lifting the blade completely off the grass, and giving several short tugs on the cord, I yanked it hard as I could. Out from under the cap flew a mouse with four tiny babies still suckling. I was horrified, and put them under the shed hoping there was some little corner she could keep them warm and build another nest.

Ever since then, like, every time I go to start the mower there is another mom and babies. Today was no different, except the babies flew out without the mother. It wouldn't come out by itself, even with gentle tugs, so I assumed I had killed it. Sure enough, I yanked the cord once more, and out flew the mom, pretty badly hurt, and dead. Now I have four tiny babies I'm trying to feed diluted milk and keep warm under a bulb. I don't think I can get enough into them to live, and I'm not going to just throw them in the bushes. But that isn't my problem.

I want to know is there some particular reason that even though the shed has plenty of hidy holes and bedding stuff, she chooses to go up into the lawn mower to have her babies!!!!! And what can I do to prevent that if anything??? Can anybody help me?????

I'm not insane or making this up. It really is happening, and my heart lurches every time they all fly out. Today I was so upset when the mom came out all mangled that I figured I have to find out how to keep them out of there.

I found a mouse nest in an old lawnmower engine also. I figured that the grass clippings that get caught in the engine cowling was the attraction. Without taking the cowling off each time you use it and cleaning it out I don't know of anyway to prevent it. On the other hand it sounds that you are heading for a major mouse problem. One thing that you could do is blow the engine cowling out with compressed air. Blow the air in around the top of the engine by the starter rope area.

Can I fill my lawn mower's gas up when it is warm?

I know I can't open the oil cap when it is warm, but can I at least fill up the gas?

Also, how long for it to 'cool down'?

yes you can fill it up when it is warm , but there are guide lines for doing this.

First I must presume that you are of a young age, so my first advice is too always ask an adult like your mom or pop first. Your mother and father are your guides in life for learning, commen sense and safty...

First rule of thumb is that before you even start to mow the lawn fill up the gas tank when the motor is cold, so that you do not have to deal with this issue in the first place. (unless you have a very large lawn that takes more fuel to mow that what the gas tank can hold.

To answer your other question on how long to wait untill the motor is cold enough to fill the tank again without much hazard, I would say at least 10-15 minutes, and the temp of the motor should have come down enough to make it safe.

Always use a funnel to fill up the tank again at this point. You use the funnel because it reduces the amount of fuel that could spill and cause harm to you. Also remember to add the fuel in slowly so that you do not over fill the tank and when you remove the funnel the gas spills out of the tank and could be potentionally dangerous. Make sure that you are always standing when refueling equipment, just in case it does flame up, it is faster and easier for you to get away , because you are already standing, instead of loosing a second or two trying to get up from your kness or if you are sitting.

Hope this helps you with your question..

Do small gas powered lawn mowers have a gas filter in the gas tank or any other place?

I found out that the cap on my gas can was missing and that the screen that normally filters the gas of contaminants before it gets poured into the lawn mower gas tank was torn, allowing contaminants to get into the lawn mower.

My gas powered lawn mower would not start. I tried using some carbeurator cleaner with carbeurator removed from engine and cleaning gas line too and spraying into gas tank from the line and into the top of the tank and then using a funnel with a filter screen to filter the contaminants from the gas, refilling the gas tank with the cleaner gas.

It only starts when I spray directly into the out take of the carbeurator now and only for a few seconds til it runs out of that gas supply.
Something is still plugging the line apparently or else I have "bad gas". I was wondering if there was a "sock" in the gas tank that catches debris that could have clogged, and how to clean that? I might have to take tank off lawnmower and get some detergent in i

It is very uncommon to have a filter in lawn mowers to catch debris.

What you describe seems to be a fuel cut off so I believe your logic is proper.

Some mowers have a needle valve or shut off valve - perhaps some debris collected by it and this caused a plug.

Some carbeurators have a shut off valve in them somewhere too so check there.

I would check the line from the fuel tank to carbeurator and make sure it is not plugged either.

Finally, could it be that the choke does not open after the engine warms? Perhaps you are opening the choke lever but it is not connected to the actual choke. In this case, when the engine warms enough the choke needs to be opened to permit enough air to sustain combustion for a warm engine. If the choke does not open, the engine can stall. Check this as well

I hope this helped.

Craftsman 25 HP lawn tractor - Tech Support Forums - TechIMO.com

I have a craftsman Lawn tractor Model No. 917.273240 25 HP electric start w/automatic transmission that I cannot get gas from the gas tank to the carburetor. Have replaced fuel filter and then fuel pump and discovered that I cannot get gas from the gas tank. Is there a check valve in the gas tank or could there be an obstruction in the tank? Need to know how to get the gas tank off. The poster seems to have moved on but I was thinking about this and realized I missed an obvious answer. So here it is just in case - many mowers have a fuel cutoff installed between the tank and the carb. If the float gets stuck open (been there - fixed that) then fuel gravity feeds into the crankcase and out...

Our Life on Wheels: HOW DO THEY DO THAT?

Yesterday morning, as we were preparing our blog post about so many different topics, I had to clear off the breakfast table for a picture (couldn’t let you see how we REALLY live!). In the process, two little Tupperware cups disappeared! Suzy uses five of them as she sets up our morning and evening pills. In the process, three end up with pills in them and the other two are emptied. When she couldn’t find them, the hunt began. Was I surprised? Yes and no. I hate it when things like that happen, but they always do. I often can’t find the pen I always keep in my pocket. When I lay down my hammer, it immediately goes across the room and climbs under something. A week ago, Suzy...
