Okay so i am constructing a cart that is powered by a 5 hp lawn mower engine. me and my friend where thinking of using a belt and just throwing belt driven gears on the crankshaft. And we were going to switch the gears using a derailer, but i dont know. Any ideas?
They don't make a derailer system for belts, only chains. You will have a lot of problems trying to use belts. I have been working on and around lawn mowers and go-karts for 10 years, I think I know what I'm talking about. You will be better of using a lawn mower transaxle, you can then swap out the pulleys to make it go faster. Put a small pulley on the trans, and a larger one on the engine, and hang ON!!!!
I just finished up with this homemade gokart with a harbor freight 2.5hp engine. We have a small backyard and my boys have never driven one before ...
Now i have recently decided to build a go cart with a lawn mower motor i have Could anyone tell me how to go about this?
it depends if the mower is a reel type or vertical shaft.........if vertical shaft you are pretty much fuddle duddled, I don't think there wiil be enough drive to make it worth your while...if reel type take motor off and do as mentioned above "cart kit"
a two seat go-cart that is powered by a lawn mower and where do you get the tools
First of all, you'll need to find a horizontal shaft motor, if it's going to be belt driven, then you'll need two pully's for the belt to go around. One for the motor shaft, one for the axel drive by the wheel. You can take the one wheel off and drill the whole big enough through the pully center to fit the axel then weld it there, make sure it's as straight as possible before welding it, you can do this by slowly spinning the axel with the pully over it once it's drilled out to fit over it, when it spins without wobbling then it's straight, keeping it there in place is the hard part. but if it's chain driven do the same thing except use sprockets, instead of pullys. Bicycle chain might be to weak, and snap easy from the torque. Rig up some sort of handle to pull for belt driven, to act as a clutch to propell the drive mechanism. a Centrifical Clutch for the belt on motor will be the best bet, depends how much you want to spend on this project.
I want to build a go-cart from scratch as a summer project. I would like to build one from a push lawn mower engine, and i don't have a lot of money to start out with. Can anyone recommend either a good book or any Step-by-Steps on how to build a go-cart from scratch. Or, can anyone just help me out on how to build one.
I don't really know where to begin....
You are looking at quite a bit of work, trial and error (mostly error), but here is a link that can help:
