It looks to me that these plastic gears on both front & rear wheel drive mowers are garbage. My neighbor services lawn mowers & the #1 problem he sees is stripped wheel gears. Some of these mowers are only 1yr old! You should see the stack of stripped out wheels he has....OMG!
Time to change this design. Looks to be across the board with any manufacture using this style system. The replacement wheels aren't cheep either. $30-75 Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Its called buy a HONDA!! All of their lawnmowers are self propelled. Make sure to get one with a hydrostatic transmission. No stripped gears. Adjustable speed control. Runs like an automatic transmission in a car. I have a 1988 Honda hydrostatic lawnmower. Never had a problem with it. Never done any maintenance on it other than topping up the transmission oil once. Plus, they are rear wheel drive so the weight of the mower gives the wheels traction. Not like the front wheel drive geared lawnmowers that have no traction and gripping power because there is hardly any weight on the front wheels! Honda's always cost more, but they will last you a lifetime. You get what you pay for!

I have an older Scotts riding mower that has the original 15x6.5-6.0 tires, which have rotted. I just went to Lowes and bought replacement wheel/tire sets, but they're 15x6.0-6.0.
I pulled the old wheels off and tried to slide the new wheels on and they don't fit on the axle. The hub hole is too small, won't go on.
Since the original size 15x6.5-6.0 tires are hard to find, I'm wondering if I can take the new 15x6.0-6.0 tires off of the new wheels and fit them onto my old 15x6.5-6.0 wheels. Will they fit?
By the way, what do all of those numbers indicate?
The 15 is the surface and the 6.5 is the wheel diameter. The 15x6.0 will not fit on the 15x 6.5 wheels. The diameter of the wheel will be too large. There is a bushing in the wheel that you may be able to change to fit your axle or ream it out to fit depending on the size difference.
I just looked at tiresunlimited.com and they have 6.5" tires. They may not have the 15x6.5 but they have 13x6.5 and 16x6.5. You may have to adjust the deck height but they would fit your wheels. 1ststoptires.com is another site that has 6.5" tires.
