I am entering my first winter as a homeowner and know that I need to prepare my mower for the winter. As part of this I'd like to get my blade sharpened.
I've read about how to do it myself, but I am wondering how much a shop would charge for professional removal/sharpening/attachment?
Wow, I'm glad I live where I do. Depending on the type of blade you're referring to, around here a standard straight cut blade would run about $4/blade. That's if you bring it in. If you take the whole mower in and want them to remove and replace, they will probably scrape and clean the underside of the mower deck as well as sharpening the blades. Expect about a $30 - $40 bill for such a service. By the way, why are you preparing the mower for winter, you should be worrying about this around March of next spring, in preparation for summer.
How to sharpen a lawn mower blade, step by step.
I would say from the product discussions that the 2000 would be best, at least it mentions sharpening lawnmower blades, and is less expensive. Pretty pricey either way it seems to me. I like a 4 inch hand held grinder. Does a good job and has many other uses as well.
pictures? try google images they have a picture of everything!
The main cutting is done by the stationary bar. The one along the bottom of the reel. Any person who sharpens saw blades, can do this work. Let them have it once at the beginning of the season, to sharpen up everything. Then lubricate the bearings, etc. etc. That's about all the maintenance,,,, then once a week, or before cutting,,, take a stone and hone the main cut bar.
You can even do this with a scissor sharpener, if the guy who sharpened it at the season put's about a 30 degree angle on the bevel.
Of course,,, you can do all of this at home,,, and leave the guy at the shop out of your wallet.
I have a few quick questions. I took off my lawn mower blade to get sharpen and I was wondering If there is a certain side to face against the lawn mower when putting it back on? Or is the blades curve the same on both sides? Do you need to have a new blade sharpened before using cause a new blade seems dull to the touch to me...Thanks
Personally I sharpen new blades. I've heard arguments on both sides of this, but I sharpen them anyway.
Mark the blade before you remove it so you can re-install it to its original position.

The 2000 is a GREAT value. The preset (25 degrees) sharpening slot exerts pressure down on the blade to keep it square and true. The diamond coated rest even cleans off the wire formed on the back edge. However, you need to spend a bit more to really sharpen your plane irons and chisels. Important points to remember are:br /1. The two supplied grits, 80 and 220, start the process. You will need at least two more grits (perhaps 400 and 1000 minimum) to finish the job. 1000 grit discs are more difficult to find in 6 inch PSA discs. Automotive sandpaper and spray adhesive will do the trick. Both discs and paper will have to be cut to match the 150 mm disc base.br /2. You are limited to a maximum of a 1-5/8″ blade in the sharpening slot. Plane irons wider than this will have to be sharpened freehand on top, which reduces the efficiency and value. br /3. Since there is only 1 fixed angle available, you will not be able to grind a secondary bevel in the sharpening slot. You have to grind the whole face each time you sharpen using the slot.br /4. The 3000 is double the price. For that, you get a sturdier unit, same motor set at lower RPMs, a glass disc base (an additional for the 2000)with greater grit selection, and most importantly, adjustable angles in the slot (allowing easy secondary bevels). The slot is also wider (2 inch). br /br /Bottom line: If I had to do it again, I’d probably get the 3000. However, it’s close.br /
