its a mountfield lawnmower with briggs and stratton engine.
Take it to a mower repair shop. There is a coiled spring inside, if that unwinds you will be swearing trying to recoil it, not to mention cut fingers. It`s a 1/2hr job for a professional.
Okay so the pull cord on my mower broke and I need to get the Recoil Starter Assembly off so I can replace it. The thing is after I take off the two plastic covers over the starter assembly; im left with 4 screws that wont budge.
The screws are flat and I can not pry them off, also the only fitting in the middle of this screw is a perfect circle. At first I thought it was a hex screw but after many attempts, I am unable to turn them to get them off. Not sure if a special tool is needed to remove these screws.
So the real issue is that I cant get the 4 screws off that are holding the Recoil Starter Assembly to the mower. Because the are flat on top and perfect circle in the middle ><.
Im lost and have never worked on a mower before so any help would be appreciated.
Those "screws" are rivets and not made to be removed. Look around the bottom area of the engine cover. You will find 3 or 4 bolts that need to be removed and then lift the cover off the engine. You can then access the starter assembly.

If u need to just replace the cord this is the easiest way. Pull the old cord out all the way either put a clamp on spinner or hold it and cut the little knot off and throw this one away. Tighten spring a little more and then take a piece of wire feed thru hole and hook new cord to it, pull thru hole tie knot release spring slowly and when it pulls new rope in cut rope off to length and install handle, your;e done.

if you pull the safety handle back then pull sharply on the cord, it should start, and the cord will rewind when you let go of it,

This is a great mower..But first let me tell you this TRUE story..Last weekend, I heard my neighbor getting ready to mow his yard. He has a gas mower. His yard is the same size as my yard. As he checked the gas, the engine and then started to yank the cord (numerous times!!) to start his mower, I rolled out my B & D electric mower, plugged in the extension cord and just started to mow my lawn. My neighbor was still trying to start his mower and looking at me in amazement! Oh yeah, the one touch height adjustment works like a charm
1. I have an average yard to mow. My grass is Zoysia and it gets thick. On my initial use of the B&D mower, I adjusted the height at Level “6″ (8 is the highest, 1 the lowest)and cut my lawn. This way I did not put any strain on the mower. The following week I adjusted the height to Level “4″ and cut my lawn. My lawn is at the height I want it to be. Now I cut my lawn on a regular basis and the B&D mower works like a charm.
