How can I hook a tachometer onto a riding lawn mower?

I recently built a racing lawn mower and I removed the governor so I can get some more speed out of it but I need to install a tachometer so I dont blow the engine. Can anyone help me out? How would the tachometer hook up to the engine?
i know the idle RPM at about 1/3 throttle so i can probably figure out what size tachometer i need.

The tach is normally tied to the ignition coil, I believe on the NEGATIVE side, but you'll need to confirm this. It may depend on the tach itself. But usually it is the coil ground side it attaches to.

How to put a Tachometer on a Lawn Mower?

I need to find a way to put a tachometer on a newer Briggs engine that has the magnetron ignition system, the tach. I have to use is a Autometer 4 wire tachometer set on 4 cylinder (I'll have to multiply the reading I get by 2). Is there any way I can adapt this tach. to this ignition system?

no it won't work , you need a tiny tack , briggs , tecumseh , dealers sell them all you will need to do is mount it on the dash ,and run one wire to the spark plug and one to ground , tiny tach is what you need to see the rpm s briggs & statton part num .19389 will help you out.

2) I've got a cold engine surge that I'm chasing (it seems to be REAL sensitive to choke). For the first 5 minutes, the engine will surge quite a bit if I don't feather the choke just right. I haven't experienced that on any of my other small engines. I fixed a hot lean surge on a Tecumseh for a friend of mine, but this doesn't have a hot surge...just a cold one. So I was wanting to monitor the RPMs as it surged. I'm a gauge watcher. Always have been. When I was a kid, I had one of those cable-driven speedometers on my bicycle, just so I could see how fast I was going. Every one of my cars have had tachometers...it's just something I'm used to having. Plus, I like customizing stuff....
