My Craftsmen Lawnmower chokes when it is in high throttle position. It runs fine when it is at normal or low throttle. The exception is when I need to start the mower. It's the opposite.
all maintenance has been done.

Is it possible that when you put the throttle at full on position it goes to choke mode for starting. My mower is set up that way. When you get on the mower and start it, you push the throttle all of the way forward. Hit the starter, then pull back on the throttle some until it starts. Incidentally I never run it at full throttle. It works just as well at half throttle and it will last longer. My mower is 10 years old and doesn't use a drop of oil. I mow an acre of lawn once a week and I change oil and spark plug and air filter and blades once a year.

I found the throttle on my lawn mower and attached a string.

My lawn mower engine surges when it is at full throttle and the blades are engaged. I have put a new fuel filter and air filter in but it still happens.

Checkout the fuel system for trash and have the carb adjusted.

The other day while mowing my mower just started to sound like it wasn't getting enough power...does anyone know what to check? I made sure it had gas...that's about all I know about them.

The first thing I would check is build up under the deck. Just turn it over and take a butter knife or putty knife or other implement and scrap out the build up of grass. Second thing to check is for a clean air filter. It will either be paper or foam. if paper and it is dirty it will need to be replaced, if foam then you can wash it out with soap and water and then add a small drop of oil to it before replacing it. Third thing check the plug for fouling. If it has build up on it or the tip seems uneven then it prob needs to be replaced. Fourth check the fuel filter (although this is very seldom the problem it could be reducing the flow of gas to the carb. If all else fails take it to a shop.

When I start my mower it immediately rev's way up, then way down and it does this over and over until it finally just quits running. Ive replaced the air filter, spark plug and gas. Ive heard that it might be a carb or vacuum problem but I don't know what or where that is exactly. Anyone have some tips?

Your carb is normally directly under or to the side of your air filter, depending on the brand. It's where the fuel and the air are mixed fro combustion. If you take the air filter off, you should be able to see a plate called the butterfly valve. When the mower is off, the plate should close the hole it sits in. Make sure the cable to the plate is also free from debris since this some times causes the plate to stick open and the idle flips around as the air/fuel ratio changes with each injection. As for a vacuum issue, hmmm, I'm not aware of a vacuum system on a mower! What brand is it?

It hunts because the idle is too slow.

When the idle is too slow, the governor increases the throttle, and then backs off as it speeds up, but the governor is a "gross" adjustment; and it needs to be "fine tuned" with the idle screw.

Readjust the idle screw on the carburetor to a slightly higher idle.

It is normal for these engines to slow down a little as they get "broken in.", and then they need to be adjusted.
