What causes a lawn mower transmission belt to break? I believe it is a John Deere.
Age and too heavy a load causes the belt to break. Were you mowing heavy clumps of grass? Heavy clumps of grass break a lot of mowing belts. To cut them, take small slices off of the clump with one side of the mower.
If your belt was more than five years old, then it should be replaced anyways. When you replace the belt, buy a Kevlar reinforced belt. It is more expensive, but has about twice the strength of a normal belt.

I am looking for parts and information on rebuilding a hydrostatic transmission on a Murray 46-inch lawn mower. Problem is that when the unit warms up, it slows down, and barely goes in reverse. New belt didn't help. I never changed the fluid.
You're going to need some help there, I wouldn't know where to start myself.
We're buying a lawn mower tractor and i found a great deal on a one tractor with a manual transmission. I know how to drive a manual car and motorcycle, but for a lawn mower that does not go fast?.. how does the manual work? Is it the traditional clutch and shifting? And why do you even need to shift gears if the machine goes so slow? The machine is a 5 speed.
You just select the gear/speed that you want then drive. There is no need to start in first and shift up.
There are usually a clutch/brake combination pedal, so a partial press of the pedal will disengage the transmission, then more pressure will begin to apply the brake. You can partially depress the pedal during a shift (required on the older units), but on any of the newer ones I've used, you could shift on the fly. Of course the older units required you to pass through the neutral position to select a different gear. The new ones, all I've seen are in sequential order, so a continuous movement forward/reward would put you in the next higher/lower gear.
it start when i jumped the solenoid for a few seconds then it would not catch up enought o run again. Have checked the starter and it seems to be working.
Make sure the battery is charged, a weak battery won't be able to turn it over enough to fire (atleast 400rpm to start)..., if the starter is just spinning, could be a nest... but the starter gear could be stripped, these are cheap and easy to replace..., or the ring gear could be worn out (if plastic). Now the solenoid, if you have to jump that, that needs replacing as well.... make sure the key is on the on position though to start it by jumping it. Also make sure the battery connections are good and not corroded. If corroded, take the cables off and clean em. Also if this is a over head valve engine.... the valves can get out of adjustment and catch at the compression stroke, no matter how good the battery is, it'll still catch on the compression stroke with out of adjustment valves.
Is the manual like a car where you always have to clutch and switch gears? which better and why?
well.. .similar, you do have to clutch yourself on manual; automatic, you just pull and it goes on its own
Yamaha files patent for Enduro bike with CVT transmission ...
Yamaha recently filed a patent in the United States for an enduro motorcycle with a continuously variable transmission. The CVT, as it's better known, is one of the most efficient means of transferring power in an automobile application. Yamaha, as well as nearly every other manufacturer of modern scooters, already uses simple CVT transmissions in its line of small-bore scooters, but the gearless transmissions have yet to make an appearance for off-road applications. While the inherent efficiency of the design is one reason we are interested, we also imagine that the single cylinder engine design used by nearly...
