Lightweight Lawn Mower

Answers

I have a battery operated lawn mower. I love it! Any one else have one?

It uses no gasoline, no oil, no cord to run over, is lightweight and very quiet.

I have had one for six years now and I love it. It is so good not to have gasoline sitting around in the garage. The only part I hate is when my husband forgets to plug the charger in when he is finished and I don't find that it is not charged until I am out and ready to mow! It is the best. We also have a battery operated weed eater. I love how quiet they are.

What should I use to make the chassis for a go-cart using a lawn tractor engine?

Our lawn tractor ("ride-on lawn mower") broke the other day - the sprocket that drives the blade belt broke, and my dad just got a new mower. My brother and I are hoping to eventually built an off-road go-cart with it. It's an 18-horsepower horizontal-drive engine (I'll have to figure out a way to convert the rotation to a vertical driveshaft). Anyway, I'm planning on using the wheels, axle, steering linkage, etc from the old mower if possible. (The goal here is to spend as little money as possible.)
Anyway, what should I use for the chassis? I don't want to buy a ready-made chassis, as that would cost $$. lol

I've got a friend who does basic welding, so I'm thinking some kind of lightweight tubing (maybe tubing from a chain-link fence)?

I also have an abundance of every sort of wood (we recently tore down two barns and a corn crib) but I'm assuming wood is too heavy and has too much flex.

I'd be very appreciative of any suggestions - especially from people who have done this in the past!
Thanks for the input, where would I get those materials?

With a motor that size you should use 1inch crome molley tubbing or 1 inch thick wall tubbing. I have used it for a cart in the past and it is very strong and reliable.

If you could have a shopping pree to buy any 5 things you want. what would they be?

Your life and income otherwise does not change...just 5 things.
Mine: 1)a dyson lightweight ball vacuum
2) an airplane for my husband
3)another economy car
4)a riding lawn mower with a bagger
5)a giant stack of drywall (for home improvement)
will these be the next five things you SAVE for?

1) and iPOD or an mp3 player... i'm always afraid to buy one because they ware out easily
2) a piano or a decent keyboard.. i stay in school for an hour everyday so i can use one of the pianos at school to practice
3) a new violin.. mine is really cheaply made
4) one of those smoothie makers on TV shopping networks (magic bullet?)
5) a ceramic hair straightener? i've always wanted to try and grow it out a little without getting a jew-fro :)

and nope, if i'm saving up for anything it's my tuition and residence in university (i'm taking a loan that has to be paid off after i graduate). also, a plane ticket back home (i'm going back early July and it's gonna cost $1400 but considering it's been TWO years since i saw my mom, it's worth it!!)

as the loan is going to be paid off i'm gonna have to be paying off mortgage for a HOUSE.. so that'll be the next for which to save up... when i wrote that list i was thinking of things i'd like to receive say for christmas. lol

backyard/gardening....?

i live on my own and i do the yardwork myself. i bought an equipment for cutting the grass on my lawn, kinda like a lawnmower but smaller in size, a little lightweight and it doesnt have a motor. i dont use the regular mower(those loud, heavy machine) because it's really hard for me to push and pull it. the one that i have now doesnt have a motor, just a simple kind, with sharp cutting blade that spins when push and pull..but it's still hard for me use it..pull and push, it's like using a regular mower. it's heavy and makes me exhausted. will it help if i use WD-40(spray) on it? maybe it will make it run smoothly and easier to pull and push...should i spray it BEFORE or AFTER i mow the lawn? and do i need to wipe it off or just leave it on after i spray it?

Anne,

you can oil it before, during and after use. It may be easier to push. I recall the old ones were rather heavy and hard to push, and they rusted easily. Folks were always oiling them to keep the smoothly operating and to prevent rusting. You can leave the oil on it. It will "sling" off a bit during use anyway.

good luck

Trimmers and Edgers For The Lawn by Thomas Fryd 720-298-6397 - RS ...

When you care for your landscaping, you probably use your trimmer and edging tools as often as you use your lawn mower itself. Most lawn mowers don't get to everything and almost all lawns butt up to fences, walls, etc. and have sidewalks and patios they intermingle with, that the lawnmower can't get to. So trimmers and edgers take up the slack.

The question is, what kind should you use?

Traditional Edgers The traditional lawn edger is dual-bladed and has a long handle. Using it is not really hard work if the blades are sharp and it requires no power or gasoline as it's entirely hand-operated. For going around sidewalks and concrete edges, it works great, but it's limited to those areas alone. These are lightweight, durable, and easy to use tools. They do require some muscle power, but only moderate amounts.

Tractor Mower Review: Sunlawn 16-Inch Light Weight Manual Push ...

I purchased this mower to cut a small narrow yard that runs alongside my driveway. What a joke. It can't really handle much of anything. It only takes a tiny bit of grass to jam up the mechanism and bring this mower to a screeching halt. It does a lousy job of actually cutting blades of grass. Probably rips out more grass then it cuts. You'll have to go over the same area numerous times to get a level cut. In the past I've purchased two other manual mowers from local hardware stores that cost half as much money as this unit and both worked much better than this. I got so frustrated with it yesterday I actually used my weed wacker to mow my lawn. This is a very disappointing/overpriced product.
