i have a john deere lawn mower with a 6 volt system and i want to put a 12 volt mechanical siren on it will it work?
Dude; One way to find out. Right? The 12v siren might or might not turn or make a sound with 6v. But it might. Won't be as loud as with 12v. Now a 6v siren with 12v? Yeah baby. It'll make a screamin sound for about 30 sec or until it smokes or catches fire. I say it's worth a try. What could happen?
The efficiency of gasoline engines, lawnmower or not, is called "Thermal Efficiency". This is because they are heat engines.
Steam Engines are about 15% efficient
Gasoline engines are about 25% efficient
Diesel engines are about 75% efficient
Jet engines are about 10% efficient.
This is because most of the energy from burning gas
is blown out the exhaust pipe.
I tried starting my lawn mower today for the first time this season. I couldn't. It is like it uses up the primer gasoline and then does not get any more... like if it ran out of gasoline. It has good oil, good gasoline, and good sparkplug but that is the extent of my mechanical knowledge.
It does start when I prime it. And I have tone that many many times. The problem is that it does not stay running for long... just a few seconds blowing out white/gray smoke... and then dies.
All the previous answers are fine answers but, they fail to answer why your mower won't start. The reason is that over the winter the gasoline left in the carburetor has turned into a gummy varnish. The gas cant get through this gunk to get to the engine to feed it and keep it running.
There are several tiny passages inside the carburetor that must be thoroughly cleaned before the engine will run properly. A small engine mechanic will be well versed in this procedure and can carry this out for a small fee.
My lawn mower has been left out in the rain and all through the winter, Ive heard all I need to do is drain the gas, and put new gas in, but how do I do that?
Is there anything eles I can do to get it going?
I am a single mom, and am not mechanical at all. cant afford a new one right now.

Make sure you actually have water in the gas..... with a flashlight shine down in there and look for little bubbles at the bottom.... if you do, turn the engine on its side to dump the gas... I'd go get some 91% percent rubbing alcohol (clear) and pour it in the tank, swish it around good and drain again (this sucks the water up...) fill with fresh and try to start.
If it doesn't, try removing the air filter..... usually they will get wet and close up.... this is just like choke... it will not run, or barely run after the air filter has closed up.
Be sure to check the oil!! drain and fill to the full.... use a HD-30, this will be fine.
Next time use a fuel stabilizer in the gas.... and keep something over the engine. (and cover the gas cap with tin-foil)
