I have a "Yardworks" 21" gas powered push mower that I bought from Canadian Tire a couple of years ago. Yesterday I was mowing the lawn and I while I was pushing the mower under some shrubs there was a instant loss in RPM's and I had no idea what had happened. I started looking around the mower and then noticed a lever that looked like it was supposed to have a spring attached to it. I checked my manual to discover that the governor return spring was missing. I searched around my lawn to discover the spring, but it was mangled pretty good!
Im not that mechanically inclined, but I rigged up some twist ties to pull the lever to get it running and I then noticed that the mower could run a lot faster with the lever pulled all the way open. It was great to see it running and cutting quicker.
My question is this, would leaving the rigged set-up I have which has increased the power on the mower cause damage to the engine? I still plan on getting a replacement spring from MTD, but if I can run it with some more power without worrying about damage that would be nice!
The extra power is nice, but it will ruin the engine by over revving it. I would not run it like that.

I have been looking to buy a lawn tractor since we just bought a house with a little over a half acre of grass. I have mowed it once with a push mower and won't do that again.
Can anyone recommend a quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less? I do not need a zero turn or anything fancy like that.
I was looking at the Troy-Bilt Pony 17 HP, 42 inch cut. However, it looks to me to be the exact same mower as the Bolens and the Yard Machines...all made by MTD. I found a website which pretty much rated them as junk.
I was considering a Craftsman from Sears, but all but the more expensive ones have a manual transmission (stop to change speed).
I have considered used, but am not thrilled about going that route when I can buy new for not much more.
John Deere has always made great lawn tractors and highly rated in COnsumer Reports. The same can be said for Toro. Check them out at your local Home Depot or Lowes.
Craftsman Lawn tractors are manufactured(along with cub cadet) by MTD manufacturing. Briggs & Stratton Eng. are what's in the price match DLS3500 Craftsman.(model #'s ending in 28811,28812)
The Toro Riding Mower (LX)at Home depot is mfg. by MTD as well. (from the user manual) Specs on 2 different mowers match. (both at Home Depot) I also cross refrenced these with briggs & Stratton, MTD, and Toro websites. ?? any comment??
Sears and anyone who does price match purposefully gets special model numbers so they don't have to price match.
Heck, the same item from the same company might have an "S" on the end to show its a "sears model" vs. an "H" on the end to show its a "home depot model" just so they don't have to price match.
You might be able to show your evidence to the manager and they might still price match, but legally, they probably have a way out.
