My wife and I were given an "old" Murray 20" mower, that has definitely seen better days. I decided to go to my local Ace hardware and replace what I can, it was a FREE lawnmower after all. I bought new wheels, a new throttle kit, and a new blade. Got everything on except the blade, because I can't get the old one off. I don't know if I am turning the nut the right way(I am turning it to the left, lefty loosy righty tighty). HELP!!
You are correct. But before you attempt it again, remove the spark plug wire. If you get the mower blade to spin, you might inadvertently get the mower started. So remove that chance. Also take a block of wood and wedge it if front of the blade to keep the blade from spinning when you try to loosen it. Good luck!
Neg 5 out doing some cold starts.
How do I Know for Sure if it is froze up & How Would I Un-Freeze it, if it is The Engine Is a mtd ,12 hp Murray, I' think it come from walmart 5 or 6 years ago, It has a new Battery, The starter engages but wont turn the fly wheel, I have tried by hand to turn the flywheel and have'nt been able to move it, are there any other ways to try to turn the piston ?
A locked engine is best unlocked ( if possible) by this method.
!. Take and lift open the hood and right on the top exposed engine shaft, near that screen wire, you will see a bolt and nut that directly attaches to the crankshaft. Put a socket wrench and breaker bar on that and try to turn it clockwise, dont turn counter clockwise as this is a right hand nut.
2. Before you get that socket wrench and breaker bar onto that crankshaft nut be sure to remove the spark plug and squirt substantial amounts of WD 40 into that plug hole.
Then apply lots of torque to that socket and breaker bar.
You cant turn the blade, that is a belt driven machine im sure, so the belt would slip, so you need the socket wrench and long breaker handle to put lots of torque onto the crankshaft nut.
This is a 1/2 inch thread on there so fear not of damage to anything there just put lots of torque on it.
I have a Murray 20" plain old push mower. 2 of the wheels have gotten quite loose and make it very difficult to push as they go on a slant now. I thought I could just tighten the nut but nothing happen. I can't see under the mower to well but it appears to be a normal nut (may be wrong) but when I clamp it and tighten the bolt it doesn't actually tighten. I did notice that the bolt doesn't slide like one would expect if the nut was loose.
Any Help??
The bolts that hold the wheels on a push mower are shoulder bolts. They have a sort of smooth shaft area from just under the head to the threaded portion, which acts as an axle for the wheel to turn on. You can't tighten these wheels, as the shoulder of the bolt will already be in contact with the frame of the mower deck. What's most likely happened is that the inside of the wheel itself, which is probably plastic, has simply wallered the hole out to a size that allows it to flip flop from side to side or just run sideways. You need to get to either a good hardware or a mower repair facility and buy some new wheels to install. Then you'll be back to mowing straight.
I have a push mower by Murray and I just wanted to get some advice on which notch should the wheels be adjusted to for someone who cuts the lawn weekly?
The important thing that will determine the height of your mower is the type of grass you have. You should never mow your grass too low or keep it too high. This can cause problems in your lawn and encourage things like weeds, disease, and insects. You never want to remove more then 1/3 of leaf tissue in a single mowing.
First, find out what type of grass you have, then go from there. Contact your local extension office and they can help you out. Without knowing the type of grass you have, or where you are, this is the best advice I can provide!
To replace lawn mower tires
Lawn mower.
* Your equipment for the replacement of the tires, like Jack, spanners etc. are not with you, they're in your basement workshop.
* Your house is located in close proximity, so you can call the help of your family.
* Younot in a hurry to change the tires and you can not put all the difficulties by leaving a vehicle with a flat tire on your premises, as you would if you leave your vehicle on a public road.
* You can change tires at a better time.
* Depending on the size of the tires, you may require some outside help.
Change the tires
A lawn mower is working toward a wavy surface. So if you go your tires flat, if not all tires are on aflat surface, do not try to change a flat tire at this point. Depending on where the tire has gone flat, you can use the following procedure a little, but ensure that the spirit of the safeguards is not violated.
