I have a '93 Murray push mower. Recently while starting the mower the cord went limp and didn't retract. I took the top assembly (where the cord rests) off to see what the story was. I don't see anything attached to the plastic part that holds the cord that would make the cord retract. Is there a spring that has broken? Advice?

Being a '93 it would cost you more to fix than replace, time for a new one, even if its used.

My lawn mower I use to beat on, maybe does 15mph? I will see tomorrow.

I have a murray 5.0 model number 21745x8a that will start after a lot of priming, but cut off almost immediately. Could someone possibly let me know what the problem could be? It has fresh gas, plenty of oil, and the blade is grass free.

the model number is 38633x92a is there a diagram i could look at im not seeing how it hooks up unless Im missing a piece help please. lawn is getting long and i live in texas its to hot to use a push mower

That's a pretty old piece ! I could not find any manuals online. Will try the Library if it is open tomorrow .There should be a set of brackets [ ] on top of the mower deck ,that when you lift up the deck should meet somewhere under the seat ,pipe ?and have holes going through where you a bolt through and put a nut on the bolt. You may have worn things down pretty good and there is not much left.

I have a 2007 Murray push mower (3.5 hp, if that's important). The pull string on it has broken, it won't pull out any more. I got a new pull string for it, but I don't know how to get the old one out.

Can someone help me?

I have a murray riding lawn mower. Ever since I flipped it upside down it runs rough and dies often. After it ran upside down for a minute till it died, I took the spark plug out and cranked it over several times to remove the oil from the top end. New spark plug and oil change.

I also have a push mower that won't stay running. Do mowers have fuel filters?

The mowers that you have don't have fuel filters.

An unfortunate fact that might be contributing to your riding mower not running right is that the only way the crankcase oil can lubricate the moving parts of the motor is if it's upright.
Depending on how long the motor ran while up side down you could have damaged the cylinder wall, rings, wrist pin and bearings. All of these contribute to the engines compression.

To get an idea of your motors compression, remove the spark plug and ground the plug wire to the head or motor block. Place your finger over the hole and rotate the motor. If the compression is strong enough to push your finger off of the hole, then your compression should be ok. If not, you will need to rebuild the motor.

If the compression is ok, the problem might be that oil got into the carburator or gas tank when it was turned upside down. You can drain and clean the gas tank and make sure the carb is cleaned and rebuilt also. Depending on your model, you should be able to remove, clean and replace all gaskets on the carb in under an hour.

As far as the push mower goes, an engine needs three things to work properly: compression, combustion and carburation.
