I hear about cars being converted to run on propane so i just though maybe lawn mowers could be converted as well.
Depending on how small the engine is, we sometimes do a "spud-in"...which is basically drilling a hole just above the throttle plate and plumbing propane in right there instead of changing the carburetor out for a mixer. It's not quite as simple as it sounds, so don't try this at home folks!
But it is definitely possible! There is no internal combustion engine that can't be made to run on propane. The difficult part is mounting the propane tank on a chainsaw! :^)

I want to look into converting a gasoline powered lawn mower to propane fuel.
How could this be done? Are there kits and directions available?
It should be possible, c ars and trucks can be converted to run off of propane. (costs about $1900) a lot of commercial vehicles do it. i suggest you talk to a propane mechanic about what would be required
Like untold numbers of people, I have a lawn mower and hate the "eeeoooccchhh!!!!" price of gas. Is it possible to convert a lawn mower to propane? I live near an RV supply yard, the propane tanks and refills are easy to come by. And FAR less expensive!
it will work- i have run briggs&stratton motors off of propane- you can use a 5lb cylinder and refill it from a 20lb cylinder- pipe it into the fuel inlet thru a demand regulator- youll have to turn the mixture screw almost all the way out, as propane is less dense(leaner) than gasoline.
i want to convert my mower to run on 16.4 oz propane cans, would i save money on fuel or does propane cost more. and will my mower run as well if i convert it could it hurt my lawn mower?
and how long would a tipical push mower last on a 3 dollar 16.4 oz propane can?
There are some engines that are not practical to convert, although it is entirely possible. I would say a push mower falls into this category. For a couple of reasons.
The engine is going to draw more fuel than that cylinder can adequately vapourize. The cylinder would "freeze up" fairly quickly. And this leads to the engine running lean. You can run a gasoline engine slightly lean and get away with it. But with propane, it is a very dry burning fuel and temperatures skyrocket when it gets lean. You would burn out the valves in pretty short order I think.
If you were a landscaper running a large riding machine 10 hours a day I could see investigating this a little further, but if you are just a consumer cutting a single yard once a week, I think you are asking for headaches that aren't really worth it...
Austin Alt Car: Propane participates proudly — Autoblog Green
One of the more organized presences at the first Austin Alt Car expo this past weekend was from the Texas propane community. From propane-powered lawnmowers to a giant propane-powered school bus, you couldn't miss the vehicles. Three pro-propane groups - the Texas Propane Educational & Marketing Foundation, the Propane Education & Research Council, and the Alternative Fuels Research & Education Division of the Railroad Commission of Texas - came together to showcase ways to burn propane for transportation. There are currently about 8,000 propane vehicles in the state, and around 200,000 in the entire U.S....
Convert mower to propane fuel | Propane Conversion
The video says that it isn’t. But on better built ones like mine, the engine only runs good when you’ve got a proper mix. There is little room for error when fueling from a gas instead of a liquid. Basically it will barely run or not run at all if you don’t have it right. And you don’t have to insult yourself because you don’t know something. It’s good to ask questions. Nobody knows everything.
