I've had a gas-powered push mower since 1998 and lately it has given me nothing but grief (for example, yesterday I had to restart it 23 times in 35 minutes, and the grass wasn't even very high!). I'm thinking of getting a manual mower next time. Should this be our next option, instead of a gas-powered one? (We live in a manufactured home with a very small yard).
It's definitely a good idea.....!!! And if it's not too long when you cut it, you don't even have to "catch" the cut grass, leave it there.

I need to buy a new lawn mower. I think I want electric powered because it is quieter and doesn't produce so much pollution as a gas mower.It was suggested that I buy one that is self propelled but I can't find seem to find any. What are your feelings about gas vs electric and push vs self propelled? I want to spend no more than $250 or so. Thank you.
Trade in your old gasoline-powered mower for a new manual model or an electric corded or rechargeable cordless lawn mower. You'll save time and money-and help the environment.
Manual mowers are excellent for small lawns. They are inexpensive, quiet, easy to maintain and healthy to use.
Electric mowers work well for small to medium lawns. Modern pollution controls required for utility plants make this option much cleaner than gasoline mowers.
Electric mowers are:
Inexpensive to operate—about $5 per year for electricity.
Easy to maintain—no costly engine tune-ups or messy oil changes.
Clean—no spilled oil or gasoline, no exhaust fumes, significantly reduced air pollution.
Quiet—about half the noise of gasoline mowers.
Easy to start—push-button starting, no more yanking on a starter cord.

This is one you will have to research out on your own. The things to look for, are length of warranty, availability of parts, and amount you want to spend. You also might think of how long you want to keep the machine. Some are trash after 5 years. You can spend $795 at WalMart, or over $10,000 for a specialized machine. Most of the time, the more money, the better the machine, but not always.
I will say that I had a 1959 cub cadet that worked great, (in 2001) and I was able to order parts for it. I just had to drive 60 miles for them. A local dealer is always a good thing.

Toro is a good brand. But whatever you buy, get an electric starter on it. I had a Murray with one and would never go back to a rope pull again !
