Riding Lawn Mower Blades

How do you change and sharpen riding lawn mower blades?

On a riding mower you will need to safely lift and support the rider somehow so that it can't slip or fall. I have a rope lift I use in the garage but a sturdy tree limb would also work fine. You might be able to elevate one side so that it tilts right or left but do not trust a hydraulic jack to hold it up. Use a tool or a block of wood to prevent the blade from turning. There is a large nut or bolt you must loosen on each blade. Turn it the opposite direction the hands on a clock turn. There should also be a lock washer that prevents the nut from loosening. Save and reuse it. Pay carefull attention to any flat washers that are also fastened with the blade. My older mower has two washers above the blade and one below. Those affect the height of the cut and in some cases must be in that position in order to hold the blade in place.

If you don't have a grinder you can sharpen the blade with a file. It might take awhile but it will work. You can use any bolt or plastic pen as a balance tester. Place the bolt through the hole on the blade and hold it straight out in front of you as if you were pointing the bolt at something in front of you. See if the blade remains fairly level. If one side dips down, it is heavy. Remove some more metal from the low side and retest the balance until it sits fairly level.

While you have the blade off, it would be a good time to clean out the mower deck. Look for grass deposits, wire, string ....anything that will catch grass and slow down the grass from being spun out of the mower.

Replace the blade with the original washers and tighten the nut or bolt using something to prevent the blade from turning. Turn the wrench the same way as the hands on a clock to tighten.

Remember, when it comes to nuts and bolts,
right is tight,
left is loose...

the blades on my riding lawn mower will not digengage?

I was mowing and hit a pot hole and the blade control will not disengage the blades now, they are running all the time.

sounds like the pulley arm bent - look where your tension cable is connected to your undercarriage and make sure there isnt anything hung up in the arm like a stick or a rock or could be a little bent in which case rebending it should resolve the issue. note alos too much grass can hold the tension taunt as well and if you keep your mower outside the pulley itself could be dry or rusted - clean it up and spray some wd40 on the pulley shaft.

how can i remove the blades in a riding lawn mower, john deere L108.?

Do i need special tools for?
what tools can i use to sharp the blades?

The best way to sharpen them is to use a bench grinder. The original blades aren't the best quality and can only be sharpened a time or two. New blades can be found at tons of hardware stores and are pretty inexpensive.... sometimes it is just as easy to buy new ones.

Riding lawn mower vibrates when I engage the blades?

When I was mowing my lawn I hit a few rocks/stones with my riding lawn mower all of a sudden it started vibrating really bad. I immediately disengaged the blades and the vibrating stopped I noticed that one of the 3 blades is broken could this be the problem?

If one of the blades is broken it will throw things off balance so yes I think that is the issue, repair or replace the blade.

I have a 2004 Dyt4000 Craftsman Riding Lawn mower Model# 917.273620. When I replaced the battery, I bought the wrong battery where the positive and negitive are on opposite sides than my original battery. I didn't notice this until I started the mower and heard the grinding noise. I found the 20amp fuse that was blown. After replacing that, I discovered it shorted out the PTO switch. I replaced the PTO switch. Still the blades would not engage. I cleaned all the wire plugs with air. I started the mower and pulled the PTO switch and the blades started working. When I stopped the blades and shut off the engine, the engine would not start again. I checked the fuse and it was blown. If I replace the fuse, it will all work until I shut it off again. Does anyone know where the short can be? Can it be the clutch? If so, is it something that I can change out myself? The key switch you are talking about... is that the ignition switch? I would have thought if the ignition switch was bad, it wouldn't start the mower. I will check that out. Also, I need to check to see when the fuse actually blows. I do not see a switch by the clutch. I have been looking for a manual online, but I can't find one with the Model# 917.273640.
