Took the muffler off because I was bored.
I just bought a broken scotts lawn mower and i replaced the primer because there was a hole in it. It didnt have a air filter so i bought one. i cleaned out the carborator because it was messed up. it starts but runs for 2 seconds unless you keep pressing the primer then it goes for a while but it doesnt want to start. I need help. let me know whats wrong.
You need to clean and rebuild the carburetor. It needs to be taken apart and soaked in a good cleaner and put together with a rebuild kit. You can get the kit at most any small engine shop for about $15.00.
I have a Scotts lawn mower that when I jump it off it runs but when I remove jumper cables it dies
In small engines, the battery acts as a voltage regulator. When the motor requires little electricity, it stores the surplus being produced, when the motor needs more electricity than the engine can produce, it supplies the difference. Sorta like a savings account, put your excess money in the account and draw it out when you are needing cash.
When the battery is bad, it can't act like a voltage regulator. It consumes all the electricity and doesn't give anything back. If there is a short inside the battery, or the cables are corroded, it is the same as cutting a wire and breaking the circuit.
So as long as the jumper battery is connected to the engine, it runs. Disconnect the jumper and the circuit is broken because the old battery has shorted or the connections are corroded.
Who can do maintenance/service on a riding lawn mower other than John Deere? They charge $300!! Do we need to do service every year?
