Who can do maintenance/service on a riding lawn mower other than John Deere? They charge $300!! Do we need to do service every year?
just check in local business directory, there is almost always some local mower repair firm listed.
Took the muffler off because I was bored.
I have an older Scotts riding mower that has the original 15x6.5-6.0 tires, which have rotted. I just went to Lowes and bought replacement wheel/tire sets, but they're 15x6.0-6.0.
I pulled the old wheels off and tried to slide the new wheels on and they don't fit on the axle. The hub hole is too small, won't go on.
Since the original size 15x6.5-6.0 tires are hard to find, I'm wondering if I can take the new 15x6.0-6.0 tires off of the new wheels and fit them onto my old 15x6.5-6.0 wheels. Will they fit?
By the way, what do all of those numbers indicate?
The 15 is the surface and the 6.5 is the wheel diameter. The 15x6.0 will not fit on the 15x 6.5 wheels. The diameter of the wheel will be too large. There is a bushing in the wheel that you may be able to change to fit your axle or ream it out to fit depending on the size difference.
I just looked at tiresunlimited.com and they have 6.5" tires. They may not have the 15x6.5 but they have 13x6.5 and 16x6.5. You may have to adjust the deck height but they would fit your wheels. 1ststoptires.com is another site that has 6.5" tires.
I inherited a 1998 Scotts 42" riding mower. It hasn't been used in 3 years. I used this weekend to give it a complete tune-up & clean-up. Replaced many parts, including the battery & solenoid.
When turning the key, the mower shows absolutely no signs of life. No clicking, nothing. The battery is fully charged. The replacement solenoid sat under the shelter with the mower for 3 years, having never been installed. I'm curious if this, or the starter switch, could be the problem.
I know about the safety switches. The seat switch has been bypassed by shorting. The transmission is in neutral. The blades are disengaged. My foot was on the brake.
Any ideas?
The spark plug is new. The battery is new & fully charged.
The fuse is 10 amps and is not blown.
I've tested all of the relays and they're fine. I've now replaced the ignition switch. Still no signs of life.
Have you actually checked the "new" battery to see if it has a charge?

And have you checked the wiring going to the key switch? You said this mower had set for a long time. Are you sure rodents haven't chewed your wiring all to heck?

I have a Scotts 20hp 50" riding lawn mower and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where most governors are located and how to remove them or adjust them so the mower goes faster. Thanks
Depends on the manufactor of the engine. They are all connected to the carburetor. Follow the rod from the carb and you will probably find a lever on the side of the engine. Some are adjustable. The problem with adjusting the governor is that you can easily overspeed the engine. Lawnmower engines just are not made to be run faster than the factory setting of around 3500 rpm. Something will break and usually soon. You can go to outdoordistributors.com and look up the make and model of your engine. It will give you an exploded view and a description of each part. It will help you locate the governor on your engine.
