I have a Stanley 17.5 HP lawn tractor. It's a 2001 model that I used for five years, then put into storage for two when we moved to a house with a smaller yard. Now I've bought a house with a full acre, and after replacing a jackshaft in the mower deck, I've been mowing successfully with the tractor. Then last week, it died as though it was out of gas. Raising the engine cover, I found that it still had a quarter tank of gas. Now, the tractor will start when choked, then immediately die when the choke is released. I can see the governor arm closing the throttle when it dies. I've replaced the spark plug, serviced the air cleaner, and put in fresh gas. The problem remains. What should I check next?
As I said above, I've been mowing successfully with this tractor, this year, up until this problem struck. It is not a fuel issue, in fact, it has fresh gas and the fuel runs freely from the tank and through the filter. I can keep the tractor running, almost indefinitely, if I repeatedly engage the choke and release it. The tractor also has fresh oil and a new filter - it was just changed. When I start the mower and then move the throttle from choke to high idle the throttle butterfly valve on the carb is closing (the one connected to the governor arm) and then the engine dies.
If you stored it with gas still in the carburetor and or tank, it may be gummed up. If this isn't the problem, along with the oil and filter change, you could have a bad diaphragm or fuel line. check or replace the fuel filter also.
Five years of operation, unless the motor is abused, shouldn't mess up the internal parts.
Also make sure the air filter is clean.
