Battery Charging For Lawn Mower?

I have a Gardena reel lawn mower, electric with battery. I know it needs to be fully charged before re-use, like 24 hours, but should it be fully DIScharged before I re-charge?

By the way, the power adapter (a transformer type) was giving only 9 volts for a 12 v battery, so it would never hold a charge - had to buy a new one.

Always a good idea to fully discharge because of battery "memory".Your battery will loose its maximum charge if repeatedly recharged before being drained. The battery tends to remember the smaller charge. It can also cause the battery to loose its peak voltage more quickly.

reel vs electric mowers?

I live on a small lot. I also have a standard lawn mower. However, I find it difficult to use/start up. Since my husband is away on business, I'm thinking about purchasing either a reel mower or an electric one. But, I wouldn't want a cordless electric mower coz to me charging a battery overnight would be a hassle. Do you think it would be difficult to work with an electric one coz of the cord? I've never mowed the lawn before so I'm not accustomed to mowing the lawn with or without a cord. So I don't think it'll make a difference. But, I still need advise. Reel or Electric? I've never mowed a lawn before! Help =)

Hi, Joice,
I have used an electric lawn mower for nearly 10 years and I have found that it works well for me.
You will need a long extension cord; just make sure the cord is always well on one side of the path you are mowing.
Do not mow a wet or damp lawn; wait for it to dry.
The mowed grass will build up a little on the underside of the lawn mower; remove this build-up with a little garden trowel.
That way, the lawn mower will always be lighter to push.
Happy mowing!

Lawn Mower question, if you have experience mowing lawns?

For just a small lawn, do you think a reel mower is ok, or will they get rusted up and hard to push after a while.

What do you think, reel, electric, gas.

I need to buy one, but it's just a small lawn about 20 feet by 15 feet.

It depends on how big your lawn is, and what type of grass you have.

My old lawn was about the same size as yours and I used a reel mower very effectively on it. But with some "cool season" grasses (bluegrass, rye, fescue), you really have to keep up with it. Taller grass can be dificult to cut w/ a reel mower.

If you have a Southern grass, like Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine - they are great mowers. You'd definitely be better off using a reel mower on one of these.

You can pick up a new reel mower for about $60, so it's not a big investment. A gas or electric will run you considerably more.

Electric mower on a steep incline?

I have a back yard that has a steep incline, probably about 30 degrees. The power electic mower is very heavy to maneuver, can tip sideways being top heavy when going across and cant make it up the hill. A hand push reel mower doesn't work very well either. I am considering trying an electric mower. Will that work? I cant afford to have a company come and mow my lawn. Any suggestions other than letting die and make my life easier? Thanks

I'd suggest growing something else that you don't have to trim. Any push mower will have an issue of being tippy.

Need help starting a GREEN lawn Care service?

I'm trying to start a GREEN lanw care service in Plymouth. Ma. I have looked around and have'nt found any in this area. So the question is do you think I could find some lawn mower company or some ECO-friendly buisness to help me get the equipment I need to get this up and running? I plan on donating money from the buisness to charity once its up and making money.I'm going to donate to a cancer or an ECO cause. I'm going to use only organic lawn treatments and electric and reel mowers. I need to find or have someone build like 3reel mowers together, becaue their so small it would take for ever to mow a yard. But I think it's a GOOD idea. GO GREEN. The name I plan to use is Clean Air Lawn Care! Pleas tell me what you think and be honest I need feed back so I can put ideas in order thank you

I think that you have an awesome idea! Good Luck!

The key element in mowing grass with a rotary mower is SPEED | Eco ...

Further to the basics of cutting height (you can read more here) and how it influences the quality of your lawn, let’s examine the equally important quality of cut (QOC).

In a separate blog entry I used the roses in the blender analogy to illustrate what happens to tender grass blades when cut using a rotary lawn mower.  The key element at work in mowing grass with a rotary mower is SPEED - speed of the blade turning fast enough to tear or flail the tips off of the grass being mowed.

You may be surprised to learn that only the last ¼ to ½ inch of a rotary lawn mower blade ever does any actual cutting, but if you think about it the blade is moving so fast, that as you push the mower forward only that portion of the blade makes contact with the longer grass blade - everything farther down the blade just passes over the already mowed grass.

Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower

This summer, sick of my dirty, smelly, noisy gas mower, I decided to buy a reel mower. As someone who sees himself as environmentally friendly, I do feel more comfortable using a machine cleaner on my lawn. At the same time, I did not want to turn the lawn mowing into a huge and difficult task. After researching all the models on the market, I decided I would give the Scotts 2000-20 reel mower a try. My idea of lawn mowing has completely changed. What is to be a tedious, annoying task is now pleasant and relaxing, due to the ease of use and functionality of this mower. Out of the box, it is very clear how to set this mower, and it should not take more than 30 minutes to get the assembly. Remember to put a little dishwashing detergent in the rubber handle cover before you move on. Then you're ready to go. The height adjustment, which is located near one of the rear wheels, is easily accessible: you simply push a lever and slide to the right height. The height levels are clearly marked right on the dial (much easier than having to leave your key and screwdriver for most gas mowers). In cutting, the mower is very smooth. With a minimum of energy, the blades with good speed and torque, easy to cut the grass at the waist. I have a few weeds from lawn, and I am concerned that this may bog down mower, but it cuts all with the same sweetness. My lawn has several uneven spots, but this mower processed and well. The rear wheels of the mower to keep balanced as you grow. If you push faster, of course, the blades run faster. But at a relaxed pace, finally turn the blades fast enough to take care of a type of lawn. I myself "my lawn go" a couple of times this summer (it grew to about 6 inches high at one point), the mower, but it handles very well. As you are mowing, you will notice that there is a lot less dust flying around, no smell of smoke, and you can listen to the birds and natural sounds of the entire time you are outdoors. This reel mower cuts the grass more cleanly for sure – you can see that the grass is greener when you have done, without brown tips. When I cut the lawn, I let the cuttings and allow them to mulch in the soil. The mower is light enough to lift and carry in a storage area. You do not have to take oil and gas around, this mower takes the minimum space. Here is the only disadvantage of this mower: (1) You can get 6 "at one end (2) If it receives a stick into the blade, you have to stop and take it out, (3) You will not be not visiting the local repair shop for lawn mower every season for a tune-up, spark plugs, air filter, and a number of other problems unforeseen. Since I started using this mower, several people asked me if it is more difficult to use, if it is slower, or even worse cuts. I assume that potential customers ask the same questions. I venture to say that it's just as easy to use MOWER A REAL AS IT IS TO BE USED FOR GAS MODEL. There is not a gas mower, it is easier to use, and gas mowers do not save any time, espcially when you consider all the needs of devices with one. Overall, this is an example of a simple, low-tech solution to a common need.
