I use self-propelled mower. It cuts the grass into tiny pieces that fall back to the yard and decompose quickly, letting the nutruition back to the yard and redcue the needs for fertilizer.
Push (reel) mower is environmental friendly becasue it doesn't produce air and noise pollution. However, it doesn't cut the grass to pieces like the gas lawn-mower. Will it cause thatch problem if the grass left in the lawn?
This question really originated from a dicussion in the environment forum where people are asking how "green" a reel mower is. I am not planning to replace mine.
Thatch isn't cause by clippings, it is formed by a layer of dead roots and stems in an unhealthy lawn. The real mower should do just fine, as long as you don't wait until the grass is 6 inches high to mow it. I used one on my old lawn for several years and never had issues. I'd still use one, but I'm not about to try to mow an acre of grass with a push mower.

lawn is about 1/2 acre, centipede grass, roots stay wet in summer months.
A very sharp reel mower thats properly lubed and in tip top shape will work only as well as the one who's pushing. A top athlete in good form might complete this endeavor.Problem is the grass will have to be cut many times each week and the mower must be resharpened and lubed between cuts. The level of dedication needed to remain sucessful will devour all of the daylight that is available. This is a fools folly for there is more to life than trying to stop the grass from growing.
Whats better. Which one cuts grass more efficiently. Does one have a better effect on your lawn than the other?
Do you mean a reel lawn mower versus a rotary, or a gas lawn mower versus a push mower?
A reel lawn mower cuts more precisely and they use them for meticulously cutting lawns for like sporting events (football fields, baseball fields, golf courses, etc.). A reel lawn mower cuts better and does less damage to the grass. But, it's a lot more expensive and harder to maintain. You have to sharpen all those blades often, because the cutting action is like scissors. A rotary mower is a cruder cutting device (it's like a spinning knife) and it's easier to sharpen the 10-inch or so cutting surfaces of the rotary blade.
My lawn has a lot of grass, dandelions, violets, wild strawberry plants, forget-me-nots and a ton of other things that shouldn't be growing on my lawn. Would a manual reel mower still work alright on my lawn?
Only if the yard was very, very small. If it is .20 acre or more as most suburban lots, a bag of weed killing fertilizer and an electric or gas mower would be more effective.
I tried a manual reel mower and sold it after 1 attempt.
Do you leave it there (some places say it's good for the grass)? Do you clean it up? How?
If the cut grass is not so thick that it will smother the grass beneath it, leave it there, it will put nutrients back into the soil. If it's too thick, you will have to rake it up.

Mow Power – Five Tips in Choosing the Perfect Mower for that Perfect Lawn
Mowing your lawn can often be a hard task if you don’t have the right equipment. By finding the right kind of lawn mower, you can easily cut your grass easier, and allow for a better cut of your lawn. By considering several different factors of your lawn, as well as from the equipment, you will be able to get a better cut and healthier grass. Here are some things to consider when finding the right kind of lawn mower.
1. Consider the shape of your yard. If you are cutting grass on a slope, it is best to find a lawn mower that will be able to move easily on uneven surfaces. There are some lawn mowers that are made with the wheels at a level of twelve inches, instead of the regular height for even surfaces, making it easier to move up and down slopes, without cutting the grass unevenly. If your yard is completely even, then the shape of the wheels as well as the mower should also be considered.
