I pulled the mower off to replace the blades and noticed that the deck is warped about 3 inches from 1 side to the other. I'm trying to sell it and do not want to invest $287 in a new one.The mower is a 42" cut riding mower.

We have a John Deere Lawn Mower model number L118 42" deck. It is cutting unevenly on one side. The blade on the right side cuts fine but the blade on the left scalps on the left side and leaves a long rough cut on the right of the blade or in the center of the mowing path. We put on new blades, but that didn't help. The blades look even. What else could be wrong?
Easy, either the deck is not level, or the spindle on the left side is worn out. To level the deck, check the tire pressure, 14psi r, 10 psi f, there are two leveling bolts that attach the deck to the lift. On a level surface, set the mower to the correct cutting height and then using a tape measure, check the height of the blade tips with the blades perpendicular to the mower. Turn the nuts on the leveling bolts to level the mower deck. Also check that the front-rear leveling is correct. The rear of the deck should be 3/4'' to 1'' higher than the front. Use the deck leveling bolts and the front hanger.
If the spindle is worn out, there should be a distinct scraping sound when you run the mower.
Take the mower to your local John Deere dealer and they will be able to fix the problem.

It's a Craftsman 42 inch die hard IC/Gold riding lawn mower.
I took a picture of the existing deck on my Toro before I changed mine. If that's possible try doing that so you will have something to refer back to. Most decks are self contained except for the drive shaft that drives the belts, make sure that it is aligned correctly and it shouldn't be a problem.
Hi! I need help finding out how to repair my AutoDrive 42" 17HP Murray Riding Lawn Mower Widebody LT. 3-way Cutting Deck
Best way to see whats happened - pull the deck off. Heres a link to your lawntractors parts list :http://jackssmallengines.com/help.cfm - type in your model number under 'model' section - it appears you have a 2002 model.
Your 'mandrel' or deck spindle assy part number is :1001200MA - if you need a blade :095100E701MA - if you need a pulley -494199MA. Most lawntractors sometimes have a small block that bolts to the end of the spindle assy - apparantly yours dosent ( its designed that way). To replace the mandrel , its probably in the $60 range , pulleys( if needed) are like $15 - if a new blade is needed ( buy a set- not just one) theyre usually around $10-20 ( depending if its a mulching blade - theyre more - i bot two for my Murray and they were like $18 a piece). Any tractor parts place should be able to get those parts - ive also seen them at Tractor supply.
While the deck is off, it probably would be a good time to clean it, check the other mandrel housings/berings- replace if needed.
