I was mowing my lawn and half way finished with the lawn and heard a click and the mower stopped going. It was still running and the blades still work but will not move forward or backwards. Any suggestions?

For a few days I have had to hook a charger up to the battery in order to get it to start. Now that dont even work. When I turn the key it only "clicks" once and then nothing. I installed a new battery and it reads fine. What should I look for next? Besides a billy goat or a small engine mechanic?
Check the starter. Take it off and connect it to the battery with jumper cables. If it spins it is good. Pay attention to the plastic gear on the end of the shaft. Does it come out when you give it power? Now attach the other wire to power, does the gear move now? That's your problem, the gear is not engaging the flywheel properly. An easy fix. You likely need some new parts. Inexpensive but a little tricky to install.
Based on limited information, that's where I would start.
We changed the spark plug and fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, and checked for obstacles in the belt that engages the blades. The battery was replaced last summer.
are you at full idle? If so chck to see the pulleys are not worn out and need to be replaced. Take the drive belt off and move each pulley by hand they should move freely. Other that that it would most likely be carb, timing or ignition
