Generally, is it cheaper to repair the self-propel or is this one of those repairs it will be cheaper to buy a new mower?
If it is less than a year old, return it. You will get your money back.

I just closed on a new home on Friday that sits on a 1/2 acre.
I want to get a push mower - and out of all the lawn mowers at Home Depot and Lowes, i'm stuck between trying to decide on a Toro or John Deer.
Anyone have any suggestions as to which one to by, and even a possible model number?
Also - would you suggest a push mower over a riding zero degree lawn mower? I really think those are cool - but not sure if it's too much for a 1/2 acre yard.
Thanks!
The model would depend on how healthy you are. If you're young, then a pushmower, if you're older you might want the riding mower.
How about a self propelled model, that makes it easy to push or really guide. Either one of the manufacturers should be good, they have both been around for an age and are known for their products. Between the 2, I would probably go with the Deere, just because I like the green over the red.
Perhaps a country name?

Tag says "Assembled in Mexico", at least the one on my sales floor says that. Now don't let that scare you away, they are still great machines. Check out the reviews on that site.
I have a little over/under 3,000 dollar budget. I would like a deck width of atleast 34'' and up to 42''. I know the toro at home depot is a good buy and is ranked high by consumer reports. Is there any dixon, exmark, hustlers, etc for under 3,000? Also does anyone know a website for used zero turn lawn mowers besides craigslist and ebay?
I've seen John deere zero turns for 2999 at Lowes. I personally would never buy a John Deere but for a small budget they are a good buy.
Toro - 19 horse power Koedler engine
Cub Cadet - 19 horse power Koedler engine
Troy - 18.5 horse power Koedler engine
John Deer - 19 horse power Straggs engine
Lawn Boy - 19 horse power Honda engine
All lawn mowers are 42 inch cut zero turn radius and come from a major retailer like Lowe's and Home Depot. Is it better to purchase a lawn mower directly from the company dealer (ex. buy a John Deer from a John Deer dealer) and which one of these lawn mowers will be the most durable?
From my personal experience, I find the Briggs & Stratton and Honda the most reliable, with the Koedler doing well in third. Durability wise, nothing beats a John Deere.
Home Cheapo or Lower's are probably you best bet, unless you can get it direct cheaper from the manufacturer or dealer. It would take some comparison shopping. Usually around Father's day (upcoming) they offer some great deals on these in any of these places - check your newspaper circular for the best deal.
Also don't rule out "refurbed" if you are looking for a bargain - that is how I got my last mower for about 1/2 of what it retailed for normally...
Buy Cheap Toro Super Bagger (21″) 160cc 3-in-1 Personal Pace Lawn ...
My Toro Super Bagger was in the store waiting for parts for 5 weeks. It is less than a year and I only had problems. The dealer who sold me the mower does not provide more services and referred me to another dealer (the only one in my area that services Taurus) which does not even sell the products Toro. Check with Home Depot and ask them why they no longer carry Toro lawnmower. I had other Toro products in the past that were great and I have a snowblowerwhich is 8 years. I thought I would realibility experience the same thing with my new mower … NOT SO !!!!! br / br / I did some checks and asked several dealers who have told me that the quality of workmanship is poor and Toro is going through a difficult time finding dealers that will service their products.br / br / Please note and make sure you don 't make the same mistake I did.

Don't buy Toros - M. Strittmatter - New Jersey USA
I baought a this Toro and it stopped working the third month that I had it. I took it back for repair. It still did not work. We took it to another Toro repair shop. They got it to work. When we were done we could only use it for a short time because it was in the shop and it cost us 0 worth of repairs. It cost us over 0, but Toro only gave us .
