Toro 22" recycler lawn mower
started engine - made a pop noise followed by large cloud of bluish smoke followed by puddle of oil next to engine
stopped using lawn mower...any ideas what is wrong
The only thing that would pop and leave oil next to the engine would be an internal problem. Either the wrist pin came loose and caused the rod to break and in turn cracked the block. Any time you hear a pop and then see smoke, along with a puddle of oil it is not good, and useally means you are going to spend money either way you go. Your motor block (if cracked or broken) is not cheap, you may want to take the thing back if it is still under warrenty, or buy a new/used mower. This is not a real common thing to have happen unless their was some kind of defect in the motor. A motor will do this if it is under an extreme strain or out of oil. I would take it back.
The ultimate mulching mower heavy-duty, easy-to-operate mower is the best residential mulching available from Toro.
Both of these Lawn Mowers are $299 at Home Depot. Both have gotten good reviews. This would be for a residential home (small lot). Which one would you pick and why?

I have a Toro (model:20041) 22" Recycler with a Briggs and Stratton 6.5 HP motor (model:125K05). The blade hit a steel water meter cover and damaged the motor. The mower had a slight side to side wobble and was barely running and occasionally backfed. I replaced the crank shaft and the blade. After the repair I started it up again and it didn't seem to run any better other than the fact it did not wobble anymore. One thing I did notice was I could not start the engine with the air cleaner installed. It seems to barely have enough air intake to run.
What next? valves? piston rod? head gasket? What else could be damages and how do I tell, I don't want to just replace all the parts?

The pin sheared after I installed the crank shaft while trying to test start the engine. What would cause the pin to shear off again? Maybe I pulled too aggressively while trying to start? I installed a 2nd pin. It could be partially sheared again, it is difficult to check. If it keeps shearing, what should I look for or replace? I do think this is why it is running bad, but the real issue is what is causing the shearing? One of the stators did break off the flywheel, but the mass is so low, I can't see that causing that much of an imbalance.
You probably have a bent pushrod to the intake valve.
