This Toro Personal Pace lawn mower was left with fuel for a year or two. I cleaned the carburetor, replaced the oil, replaced the spark plug, checked the air filter, and put new gas. When I use starting fluid or prime 5-10 times, it starts. But it won't keep running. It dies after few seconds.
What could be the problem? Please help!
It sounds like you did everything necessary to get it running after it sitting around for that amount of time. I would bring it to the Toro dealer. Its probably something you just can't do on your own.

I have a 5hp Toro gas lawn mower, a few weeks ago the air filter (a paper rectangular one) and its plastic casing fell off in front of the mower and I ran over it, causing the bits to go all over the lawn. Needless to say I need to buy a new air filter and plastic casing for this.
Before this accident, I needed to take off the filter and spray inside behind it that metal part that has a little eyelit with Quickstart to get it going.
I have been operating the mower for about a month or so now without the air filter, always spraying Quickstart into that mystery part to get it going.
Last night I replaced the spark plug and bought a new air filter. The filter isn't on yet as I also need to find where to buy the plastic casing to fix it into place. I noticed that the mower will start if I tip it forward a bit so a bit of the gas or whatever is behind that mystery metal part where the air filter should be gets there then I pull the plug.
My questions are:
1. What type of damage have I done by operating without the air filter?
2. What is that metal thing behind the air filter? Again, the best description is a metal eyelit. Must have something to do with gas as making that wet starts the engine.
3. What does Quickstart do? I got this mower for free and the lady who gave it to me (I don't know her) said the problem with the mower starting was the air filter and I always needed to spray behind it with the Quickstart. What's the deal with this? Any idea?
Any help or suggestions would be awesome
Thanks
The metal piece behind the air filter is the choke. The damage you do by running without the air filter is internal to the cylinder and the piston. It is increased wear and then loss of compression. The need of the quick start says the unit has a priming problem. Take it to a service center and get a tune up. Good Luck.
Since then I haven't been able to start it. I'm assuming the filter is probable saturated with fuel?
When you tipped it on it's side you may have gotten oil into the air filter. The crankcase vent line runs into the air filter box. Check your air filter for oil. The other thing may be the float valve in the carburetor. When you tipped the mower you could have gotten some debris from the bottom of the float bowl into the valve seat. You will have to take the carb apart and clean it out.
My friend and i have a small lawn mowing business and i acquired a newer model personal pace Toro lawn mower for free. It was stored in a shed for about 2 years after being used maybe 5 times. I can prime it and it will run for 3-6 seconds but then the throttle closes and it shuts off. The air filter is new and the spark plug is new. I changed the oil and drained the stale gasoline. The fuel line and the carb are free of any gum deposits. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!
The carburetor is the problem. It needs to be taken apart and soaked in a good carb cleaner. Put it back together with a rebuild kit.
I have a Toro self propelled walk behind mower I purchased approx. 4 years ago. I have never had a problem with it until yesterday. It will start, idle for 2-3 seconds and stop. I do this over and over and it will not continue running. I changed the oil, air filter, put in new gasoline, and made sure the oil/gas lids are on as tight as possible to prevent air from sucking in.
Now this wouldn't be urgent with the exception of having two potential buyers coming to look at my home tomorrow! My lawn looks like a pasture! I looked at the top to see how to remove the metal plate and it appears I need a special tool to do so. Please, anyone have any ideas? There is no way I can load that mower into my truck by myself to take it to a shop. Help!!!
It is most likely the diaphragm. The only way to fix it is to replace it. Here is a link that may help.
