So I need to buy a lawnmower within just a couple days. I used to rent a house that had an old toro lawnmower provided by the landlord. Now I own my own house, with no lawnmower yet, and the grass is getting to the point where I will need to mow it very soon. I'm trying to stay in a budget of under $300. And I want to get a 3 in 1, primarily used for mulching.
One problem is, I'm having trouble deciding if I want a self propelled one, or regular push, since I've never used a self propelled. I have a few questions I couldn't find the answers to anyways.
1. Do I really need a self propelled mower if I'm in good shape? I never felt the need for it before mowing my lawn that was on about a 8000 sqft lot. Now I'm on a 1/4 acre lot, with some slight hills. I don't know weather the self propelled will actually be a luxury for me to save energy, or weather it will be hassle and perhaps not even keep up with my normal walking pace (I usually mow the lawn fast because I want to get it done in a hurry). I mean, I work a construction job, so on one hand pushing a lawnmower is simple work compared to what I do all day, but on the other hand, after a day hard work being tired, the luxury of a self propelled one might make my day easier if they actually work without a hitch. Having never used one I just don't know if its for me, what do you think?
2. With self propelled mowers, is it as simple to back them up if necessary as a regular mower or not? Usually when mowing the old lawn, rather than flip a 180 every time, I'd usually just push it forward one run, and pull it backwards the other run.
3. Any particular models in that price range that are good, or any lemons?
Self propelled mowers are a nice luxury. You will probably find that the mower will be slower than you want to push it, but you can still push it faster if you want. It will help a lot with your hills.
An important note is that the mowers you will buy that are not self propelled are not as high quality as self propelled mowers. They are usually cheaply made, but are inexpensive.
Honda makes a good mower, also Toro, and I have always had really good luck with Craftsman mowers. You can find one of all of these brands in your price range, just decide what "extras" you want on them.
