Toro Walk Behind Lawn Mower

Toro or John Deere walk-behind Lawn mower?

Hi All,
I am looking in to buy a new lawn mower but need your help to decide which one I want. I live in a townhouse and my front and backyard are not that big, so a walk behind, non-self propelled, lawn mower is perfect for me. I am looking in to Torro Personal Pace Electric Start Walk Power Mower and a John Deere Model BG20493. (Self Propelled). They both have 6.75 hp, 190 cc B & G motor, and both are electric start.

Cons of Toro:
22" cutting width
Price. (30 dollar cheaper than JD)
Warranty (3 years vs 2 years JD)

Cons of JD:
Self Propelled.
JD Name.
Green Color. :)

Over all I am leaning towards Toro but I have no idea how good Toro Mowers are. Should I choose from these or should I go to Sears and buy a Craftsmen?? I will greatly appreciate your help on this one. Thank you all in advance.

Here are the links to the JD and Toro mowers.

Whichever you buy, do not get it from Home Depot or Lowe's. If you need service or parts, they will send you to a dealer, so skip the middle man.

You mentioned you didn't want a self-propelled, but yet you mentioned 2 self-propelled units. If you try the Personal Pace from Toro, you are going to love it. It requires a little pushing from you, but it does most of the work and will never "drag you along". I love my mower with Personal Pace.

One thing about the warranty for Toro is that it is a 3 year "Guaranteed to Start" warranty. If it doesn't start in the first of second try, Toro will fix it for free.

It was mentioned about a Sears mower, but you run into a problem when it comes to getting it serviced. You have to work on their schedule, and it could be weeks if you have to send it in.

As far as the high wheeled mower, do this simple test. Get a high wheel mower and a regular mower side by side. From behind push down to lift the front wheels like you would be turning the mower around. Compare the difference in the amount required to lift the wheels off the ground.

Ultimately the decision is yours, I wish you luck with this upcoming mowing season.

Better walk-behind lawn mower engine: Honda or Briggs & Stratton?

I've narrowed down my choice of walk-behind lawn mower to two models. A Toro with a Briggs & Stratton engine, or a Honda. They both cost the same, and the difference in features is fairly negligible. So I think the choice comes down to which engine is superior and more reliable (although any other advice is appreciated too).

In case you want to see the exact models I'm talking about, I found them both on Home Depot's website:

Toro:

Honda:

Thanks!

Honda all the way.I try to get honda engines on all of my power Equipment. B and S is made in america, just not well made.

Help to keep my Toro lawn mower running!?

I have a Toro self propelled walk behind mower I purchased approx. 4 years ago. I have never had a problem with it until yesterday. It will start, idle for 2-3 seconds and stop. I do this over and over and it will not continue running. I changed the oil, air filter, put in new gasoline, and made sure the oil/gas lids are on as tight as possible to prevent air from sucking in.
Now this wouldn't be urgent with the exception of having two potential buyers coming to look at my home tomorrow! My lawn looks like a pasture! I looked at the top to see how to remove the metal plate and it appears I need a special tool to do so. Please, anyone have any ideas? There is no way I can load that mower into my truck by myself to take it to a shop. Help!!!

It is most likely the diaphragm. The only way to fix it is to replace it. Here is a link that may help.

Should I use normal 30 weight automotive oil in my new lawn mower?

I just purchased a new Toro walk-behind mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. It calls for 30 weight oil in the owner's manual. Should I just buy that viscosity of oil from the car oil shelf (right next to the 10w-30s, for example), or get one intended for small engines?

I just purchased a new Toro walk-behind also. The manual I have says you can use 10w-30 but if the ambient air gets up in the 90's you will have to add oil more often.

It recommends straight 30W oil which you can get at many hardware stores and automotive centers. The manual also gives you the service designations that are acceptable such as SF, SG, SH, and SJ.

Why does the grass look uneven when I cut my yard?

I have a 32 inch walk behind commercial lawn mower made by Toro. It seems like the grass looks uneven when I mow. When I cut with my 22 inch regular lawn mower made by John Deere, the grass looks all right. Why does my $500 mower do a better job at cutting than my $4,000 mower?

I also had a problem with this. I have a 61" Bobcat that has three blades, the middle spindle was loose so the blade had a bit of a angle when I cut. You could have the same deal, or you have hit a stone and bent the blade. It also could be you need a blade sharpen..You could also check your height adjustments at your front castor wheels and rear drive wheels..make sure they are the same setting...Good Luck!

Why You Need a Zero Turn Lawn Mower

Your lawn should be a source of pride. It increases the curb appeal of your property. It provides a wonderful place for your family to enjoy the outdoors. It gives you a chance to show up the neighbors. However, most of us have better things to do than mow that lawn for hours, only to have to follow up with more time-consuming trimming.

The good news is you don’t have to spend so much time on the chore if you invest in a zero turn lawn mower.

Zero Turn Lawn Mowers: Why they are Different

A zero turn lawn mower isn’t like most types of mowers. In fact, it was not originally created for residential use. They were first developed for industrial use so they could efficiently cut large areas of grass without taking a lot of time. Eventually, homeowners began seeing the potential in making these same devices available for their needs.
